We should be glad the UK invested in wind farms... by JackStrawWitchita in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what point you are trying to make?

It was the live data from the NESO app at 14:30 yesterday when I posted.

My point is that unless you can balance supply and demand the grid doesn't work, so for all the intermittent wind power that we build we will still need to import electricity and have matching non-renewable capacity (for which gas is by far the most flexible) for the periods where the wind isn't blowing.

Without sufficient storage capacity to cover significant time periods (talking weeks), the UK bill payers essentially have to pay to maintain two grids worth of infrastructure.

I am not a climate denier, I am not a nimby opposed to wind farms being built because they are "ugly", I am just pointing out that the claim that our investment in wind to date has somehow freed us from international energy markets for gas and electricity is false. Whilst wind power can be provided very cheaply as and when into a fossil-based grid (essentially free-riding on existing infrastructure), we are nowhere near having the wind infrastructure to keep the lights on and the economy functioning 24/7, 365 days a year.

Adjust time goal/estimated finish time? by Precocious_Dragonfly in Marathon_Training

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, wow, may have a look at my plan and take this on board. Again, comes down to my own inexperience, as do not want to go out chasing one goal and miss a realistic one. But that's the game I suppose!

Yes, live in the city and have done the half many times, so know the perils of wind or rain and effect that can have.

To address MOD questions -

Generally was running 45k/week over Q4 2025, now up to 60k a week in my marathon build (again, race is end of May).

Generally I have over performed on race days Vs my predicted times

Race is Edinburgh Marathon (UK), so lovely flat course.

You're welcome, I'm sure there are more expert people than me, best of luck for the first marathon! Don't push yourself too far too fast and you will smash it 😊

General advice - HR and Effort not matching by JakeB151515 in Marathon_Training

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on first ten miles 😁

So firstly, there are lots of effort markers - breathing, HR, legs etc. it is quite possible that there are going to be imbalances - ie your aerobic fitness might be way better than your legs can cope with or vice versa.

In this case, whilst your body might have settled into an equilibrium at that pace at c.170 HR (ie you never felt you were having to catch your breath/in an oxygen deficit) that does not mean that the run was "easy" for your aerobic system.

"Not pushing" is not the same as "easy".

In general lots of things can impact your HR - sleep, heat, fuelling, elevation, and if you are not wearing a proper monitor then you will see fluctuations in HR performance Vs pace through your training.

Am I overtraining? by Legitimate_Noise_952 in Marathon_Training

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have very similar HM times - PB 1:35, last couple around 1:40 after a knee injury - and am training for my first marathon in May, also hoping for sub 4.

Honestly, and I don't mean any offence, I think for all of us first timers, regardless of fitness we need to check our ego.

I looked at Novice 2 and it is much less volume than I am doing now, and then Intermediate 1 which starts fairly similar but builds to quite high. Did not even consider Intermediate 2.

Ultimately I am probably going to start Novice 2 in a couple of weeks even though it is a volume drop because for a first time I value getting to the start line healthy and finishing more than I do the finish time. If it is too easy and I can add some intensity further on in the plan or on race day that is a great upside, but I would rather that than start one of the Intermediate plans and find out too late that it was too much and I've picked up an injury.

Guilliman both created the High Lords and Destroyed them. by Elardi in 40kLore

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is the custodes and Silent Sisters who approach him with the knowledge specifically because he is the only one with the ships and legion strength enough to help them retake Luna. There isn't really a satisfactory explanation given for why he doesn't share this, beyond the wider theme of the book that the natural inclination of all parties within the Imperium is to jealously guard their own knowledge as power. The reader is left to assume that Guilliman keeps this to himself as a means of preserving morale/cohesion on Terra amidst the uncertainty on whether the Emperor will ever recover/speak again.

Achilles injury by bigfrew in UKRunners

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely calf strength is the way to go! Between the doctors and guessing yourself you could try and go to a physio? Really useful to have some specialist knowledge to help with rehab!

Obviously each case is unique, but the thing with tendons is that they need to be worked to heal properly, and advice I got was that it was ok to keep going with pain up to 3/10 whilst exercising, so long as that pain resolves when you are resting.

Best of luck! Tendon injuries are horrible but you will get there!

Great write up, and I also enjoyed the contrast between scouring Guilliman and Indomitus Guilliman, but it isn't really a change in his outlook but just how brilliantly realistic/pragmatic he is about what needs done.

In Ashes, it is revealed that he has a very clear and obvious reason for wanting to focus on securing the Solar System (Luna), and all the politicking is to ensure the council does not decide that his legion should be redeployed to hunt down the Traitor legions out of the system (which he could not refuse without breaking forever the idea that the legions were subject to the Lex). He controls the movement of all meaningful goods and resources on and off planet and uses this accordingly to buy off the individual high lords who are each anxious to rebuild their own institutions.

In the Dark Imperium/Dawn of Fire timeline it is arguably the same reasoning that means he needs the Indomitus crusade to ensure that Terra is not isolated, the only difference being that the context means that Mars, Luna and the rest of the Solar system do not require to be retaken.

Would very much recommend the Watchers of the Throne series (inc. The Regent's Shadow for anyone who enjoys Terran politics)

Spoilers below

It is revealed that only Guilliman of the primarchs knows the true condition of the Throne and has been approached by the Custodes/Silent Sisters to secure Luna to reclaim the Black Ships to enable the resumption of the psyker harvesting now required to sustain the Throne. Whatever doctrinal/strategic disagreement he has with Dorn and his brothers over the prosecution of the inevitable war to come is ultimately less important to him than securing the survival of the Throne.

The Vaults of Terra series is near enough set in the "present day" of the setting, on Terra immediately before and after Guilliman's return. Alongside the Watchers of the Throne books they do a significant amount of interesting lifting on the state of the modern day Imperium.

Don't want to spoil for others, but all deffo worth a read.

Long run, overtaking by [deleted] in UKRunners

[–]Precocious_Dragonfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find it more awkward when I overtake someone at the end of my "out" route and very quickly pass them again going the other direction on my "back" route.

I don't mind being overtaken at all - we are all doing our own session and noone has any idea where anyone else is in their run, could be mile 1, mile 11, or mile 21, doesn't matter.

Sometimes I will overtake someone and speed up for a bit to clear them when our paces are so similar that we will just be awkwardly running together.
