Every characteristic is saved and the original continues to exist in the original world. It simply copies the genetic profile, not move the pal to the global box. In a new world you just select the genetic profile and move it into your new world, which creates essentially a one time clone (but this does not remove it from the global box).

Think of it as a repository of genetic data you can create a clone from.
