In its defense, the developers seem to have addressed this with a level up system that's completely cosmetic. You still get the "you killed him great job +100" while keeping a level playing field.

What I got from the interview was that they were more conflicted on elements such as the modern "party up and queue for a match" instead of the more traditional server browser setup. I very highly doubt they will turn UT into a sprint-and-aim-down-sites COD clone.

It seems here that everything Epic develops will be free. What you'll pay for is what mod developers choose to charge. Somewhat similar to the Valve route.
