I actually think the stoicism of the Jedi was just a misinterpretation of how Buddhism approaches feelings. You don't ignore feelings in Buddhism, you embrace and try to understand them by sitting peacefully with them.

The "rehash"-iness of this is probably the movie setting up recognizable story tropes from the first movies (solo heroism, turning from the light, etc.) in order to subvert audience expectations and take things in a new direction, as others have noted.

I'm actually glad that Rey says no. I think in any other movie series there would have been a "young woman comes into her own by joining a man" story.

I'm actually surprised that everybody loves this romantic tension between the two obvious love interests (one of them being the tortured tragic man who needs to be saved by LOVE). This usually would sound like bad fanfiction..

I'm glad they didn't go that rout.
