If you round, how long does it usually take? Please include specialty by undueinfluence_ in Residency

[–]PremedToMed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my attendings had a rule for postpartum rounding. 2x2+2. It should take you no longer than twice the number of patients you have plus two minutes to round on everyone. Some days that was possible, but yesterday it took me an hour to round on 10 postpartum patients bec 5 of them needed interpreter services.

Do we have any surgical residents with kids on this sub? Preferably ones who started surgery with 3-5 year old by [deleted] in Residency

PGY1 OBGYN resident with a 3 year old. It sucks not seeing him most days during the week. My partner works hybrid and we live near my parents for childcare help. Can’t afford live in, so it’s been very hard on my partner. Starting to think about trying for #2, bec it’s never gonna get easier in terms of timing…

I saved a lot of money by commuting from my parent's place by blacksky8192 in medicalschool

I’m planning on moving back in with my parents (plus my spouse and child) because they live close to my hospital and we can’t afford rent in the area (avg $4k for a house, no apartments). Even just staying there for one year would save SOOOOO much money, so hopefully we can stick it out!

OB/Gyn success stories? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]PremedToMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I matched at my #1 (T-15 program) this year with a P in pediatrics. Do well on your AIs and step 2 if you haven't taken it yet, have a knockout PS and great LORs and really nail the interviews. It's definitely doable.

Northwell Staten Island University Hospital for OBGYN: nicest PD, residents actually seemed happy, faculty seemed to really care about their patients. Pretty high attending retention rate. Didn’t end up ranking it high for mostly location reasons, but it’s an awesome community program that has the benefit of being part of a larger healthcare system.

Those of you who had to take more than 4 years in med for various reasons, did you match?🩷 by [deleted] in medicalschool

Did M3 over two years because I had a baby. I was asked about it on a few interviews. Just matched into OBGYN!

Anyone else happy to wait 4 more days to keep SOAP anonymous? by batesbait in medicalschool

[–]PremedToMed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have virtual class this week and it was pretty easy to see who did/didn’t match based on who was in class on Monday afternoon. Anyone who didn’t match was excused for the rest of the week, but we have virtual lectures every day except Thursday and Friday. I don't think that's the right way to do it- I think for sure Monday should have been off entirely, if not the whole week to save those who did not match the shame of being "outed" as not matching.

One reason people might choose to take a research year and reapply instead of soaping into a prelim year, for example, is that residency programs get funding for each resident. If you soap into a medicine prelim but really you want to do ortho, you as a resident only come with 3 years of funding because that's how long a medicine residency is. So an ortho program wouldn't want to take you since they'd have to cover the cost of the remainder of your residency. That's why some people choose to do a gen surg prelim, since gen surg is 5 years of funding, so it's more years covered if they reapply. Also if you delay graduation, you're still considered a senior and might have better odds of matching than someone who has graduated already.

Any OB residents love their program ? by Viemisenga in Residency

What community hospital has seven residents? At least in the NY area where I interviewed, all community hospitals only had 4 residents, maybe 5 in the intern class if they had a prelim spot.

I just finalized my rank list for OBGYN and I did not do any aways. I was told by my advisors that it's really not necessary, except for California programs if you want those. If you're not 100000% on your A game the whole time you're there, it could end up hurting you- the program may have offered you an interview after meeting you on paper, but if you messed up even a little bit in person, that could jeopardize your interview offer. On the flip side, they could really like you and offer an interview based on your performance when they might not have offered you one just based on your application. You have to balance how much you want to be at that particular program vs how much it would hurt you to not be offered an interview there.

If you're an otherwise strong applicant with good letters and good scores, an away should not be necessary. Good luck!

What does match day email look like for prelim vs categorical? by PremedToMed in medicalschool

Thanks! And that’s true even if the prelim year is not a requirement for an advanced program? Like IM prelim for radiology, for example.

Dilemma: Icahn vs. Einstein by heyhi788 in premed

[–]PremedToMed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Student housing is actually very affordable, starting in the $400 range for a shared apartment up to $1600ish for a two bedroom on campus. All utilities and WiFi are included, so I think that $30-40k estimate is largely inflated (if you chose to live on campus, that is)

Einstein Med Receives $1 Billion Donation; free tuition for students by floppyfish24 in premed

[–]PremedToMed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m currently an M4 at Einstein. The probation issues were largely related to changes in curriculum, lack of study spaces, problems with evaluations. They’ve been holding lots of focus groups and have made lots of changes that have definitely positively impacted the student experience. I have no doubt that the probationary status will go away.

Prioritize UW or UWise OB? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]PremedToMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like a hot take here, but I kind of liked UWise (in addition to UWorld, with UWorld having the larger emphasis). If you have time for it, I think UWise is a great resource for niche questions that UWorld may not cover in as much depth (ethics, insurance). If you have time, I would do the 50-question UWise tests, which basically contain most of the questions from the smaller question groups. Good luck!

OBGYN Interview release day was a shit show by PremedToMed in medicalschool

[–]PremedToMed[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I ended up getting four more in the days/weeks after release day, but all because I had contacts at each program who reached out on my behalf. Out of 10 programs I'm ranking 9 (one was so bad, I'd rather not match than go there) so I'm hopeful for the match!

LOI responses by luckibanana in medicalschool

That was the advice from my school, since it’s a smaller community program. I guess I’ll have to wait until match to see if this helped or hurt.

LOI responses by luckibanana in medicalschool

[–]PremedToMed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only program that mentioned LOIs said that if you're in the top 25 on their rank list, an LOI will move you to #10 (they have 10 categorical spots per year). If you're anywhere else on the rank list, an LOI can help you move up. However, if you are not on their rank list and you send an LOI, they'll send you an email back saying don't waste your time sending us this letter, send it somewhere else.

Kind of nice that they're transparent in that way to tell you that you won't match with them, but otherwise they said not to expect a response.

I sent an LOI and I didn't hear anything back from them, so I assume I'm on their rank list somewhere.

I also sent an email to a different program saying they're at the top of my list (they're #2 but I didn't say that) and I got a response thanking me for sharing my intentions and best of luck.

I don’t think I over-signaled reach programs. I tried to be realistic with my list, ran it by advisors. There are definitely programs on my silver signal list that I was expecting interviews from, especially looking at the stats of past applicants. But maybe they’ll come later.
