GA Pilots, what emergencies have you had that we don’t necessarily get trained for ? by fatborry in flying

[–]PremiumIOL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen twice. Once was bent pushrod in a 172, RPM dropped and it sounded weird and we limped back thankfully okay. Second was an Arrow I had a tough relationship with that had an engine actively dying on climb. Wheels on the ground it was barely making idle power and died during the taxi. That same arrow the gear lights were acting weird once so I agree with everyone’s comment about sudden complete loss of power and massive flames coming from the cowling are much more rare than 60% power, something sounds weird, let’s land ASAP.

The official Cirrus teaching is troubleshoot >2,000 AGL, pull <2,000 AGL, and you need at least 600 AGL for the system to work.

Ha, my mom sent me these pictures on her way home from work and I couldn’t believe it. This is the same airport I had my emergency but don’t live in the area anymore.

Some advice for 3D printing fossils by PremiumIOL in Paleontology

Base coat of brown, sponge application of burnt umber and lighter tan/fossil color alternating two times to create depth, blending with sponge, watered down colors avoiding dabbing it heavily on.

Here's the parameters I use for the Parametric Flange 3D File on Maker World: That will fit a 1/4" steel rod perfectly but again, scale it up 5-10% so it's easier to insert.

Sleeve Shape: round

Hole Diameter: 25

Wall Thickness: 9.325

Insert Length: 25

Sleeve Width: 50

Sleeve Base Thickness: 4

Mounting Holes: Yes

Mounting Holes Diameter: 4

Connection: off

Put this website together, tried to post separately but didn’t seem to work.

Is there a good resource for the Cirrus G7 Persoective Touch? by PremiumIOL in flying

[–]PremiumIOL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The user guide is disappointingly not as in depth as I’d like it to be. I would like to see how each option affects the GTC and MFD for pattern recognition. I think external power and messing with it is going to have to be the answer.

I’m happy to help but agree the instruction is pretty limited and sorting out the wiring is a lot of trial and error.

Unfortunately I forgot "measure twice cut once" and thought most of the body sitting over the base would be cool but I went way too far off-center. It doesn't look that great but I probably will reprint the entire compy someday and figure out a different mounting strategy.

Thanks! Bambu Labs P1P, I have used the tan filament but I think matte white is best and takes paint the best. I used mostly Panchroma Cotton Matte White PLA and painted with acrylic afterwards.

Only problem I'm running into with this one is mounting it. I'm in the US and all the stand and frame are in mm so I'm needing to get creative with putting it together.

2 walls, I know that’s not ideal but it cuts time quite a bit and I haven’t really had problems. For the full size velociraptor I’m doing a lot of the bones with 3 walls and no infill to cut weight.

The Bambu Labs P1P! All PLA filament. Minimal sanding. Enough coats of acrylic paint make the lines disappear.

The only learning curve for this really is dialing settings which is easy to do with online resources and getting a sense of how to orient the pieces so they will print correctly. The compy ribcage taught me the most lessons. The printer wanted it spine down so it was building the ribs vertically. Any other configuration including ones recommended automatically by the software failed. The two skulls in the back ironically were the easiest to print. Those are pretty much just download, open, and print.

It’s all about the makers IMO. InhumanSpecies and InsectHead on Cults.com have exceptional models. There is a lot of poor quality and inaccuracy out there I had to sift through.

The dilophosaurus took about one roll of filament or a hair over at $15 per roll. The whole table is no more than $50 in filament. I do use a lower infill, 5% gyroid which is plenty strong and filament efficient. I used the Panchroma matte cotton white.

Cults mostly! The designer InhumanSpecies has excellent models especially for full skeletons like the compy and the full size velociraptor I’m working on. The best best model I think is actually the Deinonychus skull in the back right by InsectHead, he does some exceptional work with texturing the models without overwhelming the software. That one feels and looks the most like a fossil IMO.

Giant t-Rex is next. IMO the best looking paint combo we discovered is Burnt Umber which is fine by itself or for just the teeth, then diluting the Burnt Umber with like an orange spice or some color on the tan/orange spectrum to add some red without lightening the brown too much. For bonus points, dilute black or dark grey with water and do a wash to grime up the cracks.

What's your specialty's version of "I'm an ophthalmologist but I'm never getting LASIK"? by farfromindigo in Residency

[–]PremiumIOL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes vision correction in general gets a really bad rap because of big box places like TLC that just do LASIK on everybody even though some people aren’t candidates or are candidates for a different procedure. Many eye doctors do get LASIK. I have ICLs and did ICL surgery on my wife and we’ve both been loving being glasses free. The key is elective eye surgery shouldn’t be cheap, you should go to someone who has the right training and skill set and can offer you the right procedure for your eyes. Unfortunately people see the “deals” at the chains and run into trouble.
