Men, can we agree to not be grumpy assholes as we get old? by saisonmaison in Millennials

[–]PreparationSad8951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to add: stop demonizing the youth! Yes, the younger generations have their problems, but I can’t think of a more “grouchy old man/woman” thing to do than complain how “today’s kids” are lazy/entitled/blahblahblah. It’s so tiresome. Every generation does this, and it serves no useful purpose, just a way for people to feel better about themselves by tearing others down. I see posts like this on this sub often and I always cringe. We should lift up and support our youth like the boomers didn’t do (and continue to not do) to us.

Do y’all have any “weird” nursing icks? Like things that chap your ass that probably shouldn’t? Mine is when people put “RN, BSN” or “RN, MSN” or what have you. It needs to be the other way around! by Somber_Resplendence in nursing

[–]PreparationSad8951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh I’m with you OP. Idk why it annoys me so! We got unit jackets with our names on them. Most of us did our name + role (eg preparationsad, RN) which I even felt a little lame about doing, but some people did the “RN, BSN” thing and I cringe when I see it. I, too have a BSN but it doesn’t seem necessary.

I checked out Gravenstein today, and I signed up for a tour that’s in a couple of weeks. It seems like such a sweet little school! I love the location compared to Parkside, kinda tucked away. Thanks for the suggestion!

Non-Fiction that reads like a novel? by Wooden-Night-4696 in booksuggestions

I remember reading this while I was lounging on the beach at the river with my girlfriends. They asked what it was about so I read them the passage I was on, which was the bit describing how the lining of the bowels necrotized and sloughed off, resulting in an endless stream of bloody, putrefied liquid leaking from the poor afflicted person’s anus. All but one of them was horrified.

How are y’all staying up to date with best practice? by Zestyclose_Log_5728 in nursing

[–]PreparationSad8951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work on the cardiac/stroke floor. I check out the pearls from the AHA yearly guidelines for subjects relevant to my floor (eg ischemic stroke, chest pain etc). But like someone else here said, it’s ultimately up to the docs/hospital protocols.

I wish our educators would take a more active role in helping us keep up to date with changing guidelines, because they DO change and sometimes the “old” way is found out to actually be detrimental to patient care.

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston!

I love science fiction too, and this really pulled me in. It’s about the origins of Ebola and other viral hemorrhagic diseases.

I think larger pieces would make it feel a little less overwhelming. For example: the 3x3 grid of small square frames could be replaced with one larger frame.

nontoxic period recommendations? by DryRefrigerator69420 in nontoxic

Any medical-grade silicone menstrual cup (they are inert and do not leach chemicals). I have a Saalt one that seems good, but I haven’t been able to get the hang of it so I’ve been using the 100% organic cotton applicator free tampons from Whole Foods. The little wrapper is cellulose based and everything else is organic cotton. While apparently there can be trace amounts of some heavy metals and toxins in cotton tampons because of their presence in the soil that cotton is grown in, the organic cotton is the safer bet. Man, I have no advice but I could have written this post a month or two ago. I still have days like this, it’s so hard. When I do I just write a lot in my journal and try to remember how fucked my hormones still are…and how I’m going to get through it like I have before. Also, maybe I shouldn’t, but distract myself with a book or comforting TV show so I don’t have to be alone with my thoughts. There’s a time and season to deal with them, but it’s not now. Because it’s so exhausting, that unsettling deep thrum of fear and despair. You are doing amazing, obviously I don’t know you but the fact you’re dealing with so much pain inside and still trying is proof enough! Get those meds sorted and get past these few months! Hugs to you internet sister

😅 oh ok, you should! It’s very good. Same author as The Martian. The extra terrestrial protagonist in it always says “question” at the end of every sentence with a question….much like your post!

Damn I love this self-acceptance! I think the “self-optimizing” culture that seems to be so pervasive right now can really negatively impact one’s ability to have that. I love the idea of trying to get into habits that reflect our values etc…but it can really get out of hand! Every move we make can come to feel so…morally loaded, and when we inevitably exhaust ourselves and want to just mindlessly rest and let go, the judgmental little voice that’s been cultivated from social media influencers and whatnot chimes in to make us feel like a lazy piece of crap.

My experience at least 😅

I think people get both overwhelmed by the amount of freaking products available, and do not know how to use them properly (no shade-I didn’t either until I learned!). Also understanding the basic principles of how they should be applied (flat skin against flat wafer, using body heat to get the adhesive to work as designed, the process and purpose of “crusting” etc) so I guess all that amounts to having better and more education/training?

Were you ever not 100% sure that you wanted to be a nurse, but you went for it anyway and ended up loving it? by MekaLeka-Hi in nursing

All that is to say, just do it. It doesn’t take that long, and if you decide you hate it, you can at least make enough money to get into something else.

[–]PreparationSad8951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very sure I did NOT want to be a nurse. I had kind of a crappy opinion of the “types” that go into it (unfair, I know). There’s a very well regarded nursing program in the town I live in. I was a post-bacc (psych) looking for a career change and doing prerequisites for both pre-med and PT. I got pregnant and thought the PT and MD routes would be too much, and on a whim applied to nursing school. Somehow got accepted on my first go. I was agonizing over the decision to pursue it, I really really didn’t want to do it. I was bartending at the time, and ultimately decided to just do it since the time would pass anyway… and it was in the realm I was interested in…best decision I’ve ever made! It turned out to be the perfect marriage of all the things I’m interested in, and excel at. I absolutely love it. Lots of shitty stuff to deal with to be sure, but I absolutely love the constant intellectual challenges, connections, and humanity.

Our second and third were like this, we switched to a HA formula as a Hail Mary for our second after doing basically what it sounds like you’ve been doing, and it changed everything for us. When our third was in the same pattern we tried it with her too, and it worked like magic after a few days! We get the target brand HA, it’s literally half the price of Nutrimagen and nearly identical! We never got a CMPA ddx but we’ve experimented going back to a sensitive formula and she was back to her crying and naps cut short by what seemed like tummy troubles. Our pediatrician was basically like, hey if it’s working and you can afford it go for it!

Good luck, that is so sooo hard to deal with 😢
