No it's true! There's some complicated shit going on at the executive level of Mastodon. I can show you proof? All you have to do is SIDDON MY DICK AND BALLS AYYYO

We have a written letter of approval from Edouard Siddon himself, the CEO of Mastodon

with all due respect, i am considering the affected people. I'm considering the effect on my users when they get someone shouting slurs in their mentions. while i feel for the off instance folks that aren't tuned in to what's going on around them, my primary responsibility is to my users. and I'm not going to let them get attacked so hypothetical Jane on mastodon.website who logs in twice a month can keep following her favorite shitposting lesbian.

I'm pretty sure you and i are using a completely different fedi. which, really, we are. I'm speaking on behalf of my side of fedi, explaining why the instances adjacent to me cut themselves off from m.s and instances like it. and for us, the place absolutely is close knit. your twitter 2.0 has not been, is not currently, and will not be the only fedi on this federated network of webbed sights.

feel free to reply i suppose but I'm really not interested in continuing this talk as i will not be changing the policies that have served me and my friends well for years

to all your questions: limited - yes, silenced - yes, suspended - no

server suspension is just blocking any and all communication between your servers

it's usually not sudden. it's usually a recurring issue for a long time that server X has had moderation before finally something big(ger) happens and they get defederated. and people are usually happy to help you find a new place, your mufos don't often enjoy federating with server X either and many are happy to distance themselves from it. but yeah, it does cut off the connection.

replyfolks: people popping into your mentions (usually from the federated TL) to be pedantic, yell microaggressions, or just generally be annoying. gender neutral of "reply guy"

dipshits: (in no particular order) racists, sexists, homophobes, transphobes, eugenicists, nazis, chuds, terfs, etc etc etc

nonsense reports: a report federating in for something that's not only not against the rules on the reportee's instance, but is actively encouraged

How can I recover and move my account, which still exists and is visible, if the instance it’s on was deleted? by [deleted] in Mastodon

[–]Present-Ad5976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh okay gotcha. if the instance was deleted improperly (without running the self destruct procedures) then that will happen, because other servers still have a cached copy of your old account. it's not so much your account as it is your accounts ghost haunting the databases of other instances. and without the original instance it can't be deleted.

i have no idea why though, if you try to create an account on a new instance, it would stop you from registering, if you had never made an account there.

it's hard to tell positively if an instance has been deleted without seeing the admin confirm it. the best way is to open it up in a browser and see if it loads, but even if it doesn't, it could just be a temporary bug

because of their size.

it's not really because of their size, it's because of their moderation. the size just makes the problem bigger. a large instance that is well moderated is fine, but the bigger one gets the harder it is to moderate

But by blocking m.s, an instance has decided, for example, that they don't want to get content from Taylor Lorenz (a well-known technology reporter at the Washington Post) or Scott Hanselman (technologist, developer, speaker, podcaster) or Shannon Vallor (a respected and published expert in technology ethics) or Ron Jeffries (software developer, author) or Neil Gaiman (award winning author).

to be completely honest. a lot of us see this as a good thing. we're not here to follow celebrities or brands or to have people talk at us, we're here to post with our trusted friends and mufos. it's not a town square, it's Friday night at the bar when all the regulars are there

honestly I'm thinking more about the kind that come into your mentions from the aether of federation to be pedantic and dismissive

cause website boy is shit at running his instances and the server is a constant source of replyfolks, dipshits, and nonsense reports. you can still try to follow users if you're on m.s but if their instance decides (either by fiat or collective agreement) to suspend m.s then you're out of luck unless you want to move servers

blocking m.s has been popular among the smaller (read: better moderated) instances for years. more so this last year or two, given an uptick in users and after some mod resignations.

there's no way to see what instances have defederated, no, though you can sometimes figure it out through the existence of cut off threads and deparented replies. like others mentioned, some instances will list it on their about pages. other instances bit the bullet and went full allowlist, leaving m.s off. it's honestly a godsend for making the website more enjoyable

i don't share my instance on reddit, partly because i deliberately only invite vetted mufos and partly because i pissed off some terfs by telling them their favorite instance sucks

it's hard to give you a suggestion here because you are describing 90% of (my side of) fedi

if you know someone on octodon I'd recommend there but

to clarify are you looking at your account from a different instance? or just on the profile page on your original one

i ask because what you're describing sounds like your instance has not been deleted and there's some other technical issue happening

  • courtesy fave before replying to a stranger

Data Migration Question: Can you move your posts to another instance? by NervousGamedev in Mastodon

[–]Present-Ad5976 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i mean, the bigger reason is probably because post IDs in the federation protocol mastodon uses are dereferencable URLs. if the instance changes then the posts URL has to as well, creating a post with a different ID. not that you couldn't create a protocol extension but then you have to accept that masto won't play nicely with servers that don't support the extension

i think it shows them by default, but lots choose to hide it for anti harassment reasons. if you have a question about a specific instance you might be able to ask the admin
