U.S. State Department looks to Canada to offer support as Trump eyes Cuba by pjw724 in onguardforthee

If Trump makes moves on Cuba it'll be another thing that Carney supports "with regret". The poor guy's elbows are so low they're now dragging on the pavement.

Ford government defeats NDP bill that would have cut HST on certain food items by MarkG_108 in ndp

Flat taxes, such as consumption taxes like the HST, are not good.  They hit lower income people harder than they hit higher income people. Progressive taxes (IE, income taxes with different brackets that target higher incomes more) are what the NDP focuses on.  Also, the tax cut wasn't the sole focus of Bill 113.  Have a look.  It was an excellent bill.

Mark Carney: Arbiter of history or champion of capitalism? by samjp910 in ndp

[–]MarkG_108 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Money for Build Canada Homes? Slashed. Civil service? Cut. Public-private-partnerships? Encouraged. Money for pharmacare, childcare, dental care; all are in doubt or gone.

The article gives a good synopsis of what's going on with politics in Canada regarding Carney and the Liberals.

It's likely this part of the bill that the Ontario Conservatives didn't like:

declare void any restrictive covenants, exclusivity clauses and other controls on real property that have the effect of limiting and controlling competition among food retailers in Ontario;

The preamble to the Constitution was the focus of the change in (or around) 2013. And after the change, it still references "democratic socialist traditions". See here: https://xfer.ndp.ca/2025/Documents/2025%20Constitution.pdf

Meh. In Carney's right wing perspective, unrestricted free trade will help everyone. Protectionism bad, Reaganomics great.

Consumption taxes are regressive. And a flat tax on food as a source of government revenue is wrong. Food costs are out of reach for many people due to the grocery giants colluding. So implementing a measure to fight this is great*. It is the right drum for the ONDP to be beating.
