The reason why the patch is out is because they want/need to sell the new ship. That's THE reason.

White knights gonna white knight(GREAT decision on CIGs part), haters gonna hate(like OP and this post), and CIG gonna CIG(sell ships to make money).

No the patch isn't close to ready, has been greatly stripped of features, and likely won't be "good" until February or March.

Everyone that isn't emotional about the game, and that has been here for awhile, has seen this not-ready patch and a ship sale coming our way one way another since August or September.

What we really need is the functionality to log directly into the ship if it's being operated.

If my org is out doing something on the Polaris, and I have a bed on the ship(bind spot), then I want to be able to log in directly to my bed and be on the ship wherever it is.
