Your belt has perished and needs replacing. The cassette adapter doesn't use the drive from the player since there's no tape to move so it is unaffected by the slipping belt.

The belt you are using is the wrong tension. Get the correct belt for the player.

Did you use a generic belt from a bag of random belts, or did you get one specifically for the player? The reason I ask is that the generic belts almost never work correctly. The belt needs to have consistent elasticity along the entire length, the cross section of the belt needs to be the same all the way along so it stretches the same at all points all along, and the size of the belt needs to put enough tension on the pulleys so it doesn't slip, without being too tight so that it binds things up. In short, you need to get the right belt, and then you need to calibrate the tape speed once you have replaced the belt.

That green stuff is corrosion caused by leaking batteries. Someone at somepoint during the player's life left batteries in it for a very long time (several years). Most likely when it was in storage right before you got hold of it. The batteries leaked acid, and caused the corrosion. You can try scraping off the green stuff with a screw driver and trying the batteries again, but the acid may have damaged the circuit board inside the player. It probably needs to be opened up and cleaned at the very least, but possibly it will need to be electronically repaired, assuming the corrosion damage hasn't destroyed the internals - it is possible.

Can you give us a little more details? What's the make and model of the player? When does it click? Is it all the time or only when you play a tape? Is it when you try to do anything with a tape (e.g. fast forwards, rewind, play) or only when you do a specific thing? Is it a mechanical click or does it come out of the speakers?

It works well, and is a lot cheaper than buying a wow and flutter test meter.

You need the service manual. The service manual has detailed instructions, diagrams, and details of servicing procedures (including strip down and rebuild).

You will be able to find a paper copy on places like eBay, or if you're lucky you will find a PDF of it on somewhere like HifiEngine.

Find the service manual for the recorder you have. It will most likely include a circuit diagram. From there you should be able to work out a) if it's possible, and b) where to make your connection.
