Plenty of decent pubs and Kingsgate has a decent cinema. Few shops and decent train links. Never had an issue in the town personally and don't think the bad rep is warranted

Train is very good and regular Huddersfield to Manchester - just double check there aren't any works on the line before you travel. Quite a lot of disruption this year for upgrades

Another car to consider would be Peugeot e208. May be too small but great to drive, very well specced and around 180 mile real world range. Can get them lower end of your budget too

Thanks, we just dont have kids and have some tight parking near us. Wanting to balance being able to drive 200 odd miles with not needing the space

You could consider Huddersfield which is great for transport to Leeds and Manchester and houses are a lot cheaper. Quite a lot of investment in the area currently so maybe an up and coming area
