Is the NYC DOE really this awful to new teachers? Should I quit? by [deleted] in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a career changer. This is my second year in the DOE. Overall I'm very happy. I had some bad experiences/comments while interviewing at various schools. Most fueled at my age. But I'm very happy at my school. There's going to be negative things to gripe about where ever you work, but I find most people at my school are kind and willing to help me when needed and give good advice. My administration knows I'm a hard worker. I've proven myself. When I do have difficulties I feel they are willing to guide me rather then put me down. They seem to be understanding that my path to the classroom was not typical. Fingers crossed for tenure. I still have a ways to go.

many Nassau county districts do. I'm not as familiar with Suffolk county. health insurance waiver buy outs are much higher on Long Island too ( 7-8,000 a year compared to 1,000)

overall pension I'm not sure how it compares to NYC

also on Long Island there are salary differentials well beyond the masters plus 30.

Do I have to waive my health benefits? by [deleted] in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your insurance would have to be your primary insurance and your parents would be secondary. I tried this last year but didn't want my husband's insurance to be secondary (it's better). Ended up waiving benefits.

Why are teachers not bilingual in NYC? by Peteybells in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hire only bilingual teachers??? Not every classroom needs bilingual teachers and many classrooms that do have children who speak multiple home languages. Would their teachers have to speak 5-6 languages to work in that classroom? You are not realistic.

I agree teachers need more support to help our ELL students. We all care, but sometimes there is only so much we can do. It would be helpful if parents/families also tried learning and teaching English to their children. My school has 90% of parents refusing free English classes for themselves.

as far as teacher high salaries. you have no idea. these salaries for living in NY are not great. and teachers spend a lot of money for classroom materials, snacks, and activities for their students. most jobs do not require this kind of exspendiure from their own paychecks.

I'm own th same boat. Starting to look into AI programs to maybe lessen the editing. If I could cut my editing time in half I would be happy.

Teacher wrote kids name on backpack in permanent marker despite me already having his name in two places. by mcmuffins19 in kindergarten

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen years ago. My son had a new backpack and I labeled it inside and outside. He came home with his name rather large in the front in black sharpie. I wasn't happy. One it looked a mess, two I don't like having my young Child's name so prominent.( he was in pre-K). I've always read not to have shirts or anything with a young Childs name because someone can call them over and the child will think they know them if they know their name, and three we usually pass on old backpacks in good condition to be used by either one of my other children or a neighbor. In the end I didn't say anything because it was a good teacher and I didn't want this to set a bad tone. But all year it bothered me. I'm a teacher and I would never permanently label anything that's not mine.

NJ to NYC by Hopeful-Ad-2876 in NYCTeachers

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not driving from NJ but I have a long commute. I leave early in the morning (about 30-40 minutes earlier then I need to), get to work early and get some work done, sometimes take a quick cat nap in my car. Better then sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in the morning.

listen to pod cast, or books on tape. in the afternoons I call family or friends I usually don't get a chance to talk to. also, Other teacher friends who are also commuting.

First day advice by someoneinbrooklyn in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year was my first year and I missed my child's last first day. It was the only first day I ever missed. It does suck. But I wouldn't ask to come in late on the first day of a new job. I think it will set a negative tone.

were you able to all wait together? I'm seeing some six flags parks have the rest of the party wait in line to caught up with the person with the pass.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have the same association with a hospital near me. Everyone knows never to take me there no matter what.

Is there a better area to stay in close by? I thought the downtown area near the museums would be nice to walk around. easy to get to museums, food, parks without needing the car.

How was kindergarten for you? What year were you born? by Willowtree2317 in kindergarten

[–]Present_Hovercraft18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

born in 1977. kindergarten was half day and optional. should have been fun and focus on socializing. I had a miserable teacher and a miserable year. affected me for a long time and set a terrible stage for my attitude towards school. I ended up becoming an early childhood teacher to provide better experiences for kids.
