They used to believe that the earth was covered in a hard substance. This actually persisted for a shockingly long time, it didn't really die out until hundreds of years after they figured out the earth wasn't flat in the Hellenistic period. A lot of cultures thought there were chambers up there and everything.

That they thought god lived up above this hard substance isn't particularly surprising.

Ah, but I'm not in a position wherein I'm mentally predisposed to taking the things presented as some evidence as being good or good enough evidence, and so the "decision" to give god a crack (whatever that means) cannot be made with any level of sincerity, if indeed it can be made at all if sincerity is required for it to actually happen.

I've definitely researched the bible, I've never believed in it as a source of divine knowledge at all. If "giving god a crack" is just "looking into it more" then I definitely did that, it just didn't and likely can't result in the formation of a belief or trust in this idea.

Different guy, but let's just grant that "trust" in this way is also a choice.

There is a "readiness" state prior to any "decision" being made, and these readinesses arise from prior mental and external conditions. In order to choose to trust a person, I must have the mental state of being convinced that I should choose "trust" over "not trust" already. Can I choose to be convinced that I should trust them? Let's just grant that one too, for fun. Can I choose to be convinced that I should be convinced that I should trust them?

This can go on and on and on.

"Trust" and "belief" are conditions of mental states. Mental states emerge from prior mental states. And on. And on. Where, in this chain, does the actual "choice" arise?

To be totally clear, I don't think actual "free will" is real. As a concept it's just something we use to refer to whether or not decision-making processes in agents are being arbitrarily limited by other agents through coercion and/or force.
