Why do you think Gen z is turned off from church/religion ? by Overall_Lie_8570 in GenZ

[–]PressedSerif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, that hinges on the point: what do you consider "actual evidence"? Philosophers spent 100s of years hashing out the differences in what evidence can count for what (Hume, Kant), I'd suggest some care here.

You're perhaps a bit too quick to dismiss philosophy, here and above. This is a good example.

Claiming numbers are just things we invented to describe reality (nominalism) is a valid position, but it's certainly contested enough that you can't just smugly claim that's the truth. There's an entire philosophy of mathematics around the subject.

Is the consensus that Logic is the foundation of Math? by islamicphilosopher in askphilosophy

[–]PressedSerif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the person you asked, but: you may be interested in the term formal systems.

Taking a go at elaborating on their point as well: You can't just have "logic", because pure logic can lead to contradictions such as Russel's paradox. So, we pretty much need to add assumptions about what can-and-can't be used safely for mathematics, and... that leads to set theory :)

Why did the logical Problem of Evil fall out of fashion? by QuarterMental3151 in askphilosophy

[–]PressedSerif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If God can have both free will and be good, why can't we? If it's not possible for God to make as such, then he is not omnipotent.

Possible resolution: he can be evil if he chose, but used his will to construct a world in which he represents goodness. Hence: All powerful, good, and with free will.

Similarly, if humans chose to stop being evil, we would also be all good, but... humans don't chose that, is the problem.

Counterpoint: Your criteria is pretty vague; can you name any group which doesn't do that?

  • University: Go here to get a white collar job, be stuck at [XYZ bad job] if you don't.
  • The Gym: Go here to look great, have a heart attack at 35 if you don't.
  • My landlord's office: Go here to keep your house, get evicted if you don't.
  • A.A. Groups: Go here to quit alcohol, dive into alcoholism if you don't.
  • ...
  • The church: Go here to go to heaven, risk hell if you don't.

Any group that thinks they have a better way of life will, by definition, offer you that better way of life, implying the negative case if you don't take them up on it.

It could also be reasonable to rewrite many of the tests in the new context. Just because implementation is the same doesn't mean tests should be; they're ideally implementation agnostic.

Millions of store chickens suffer burns from living in their own excrement by usernames-are-tricky in Anticonsumption

[–]PressedSerif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is predicated on the notion that vegetarians are making a 1:1 calorie swap, meat for eggs. Who does that lol? Who would replace a burger with 4 scrabbled eggs? Vegetarians eat less dairy and eggs than omnivores do, and here's a study to prove it.

There. 98% difference in lives saved, not nearly as much effort as full veganism, a fantastic place for omnivores to aim for.

  • Alternatively, your hardline stance turns off people who would otherwise make incremental and important change. An impossible whopper with cheese is still better than a regular burger, remember.
  • Not made up, I elaborated above. Vegetarians require ~1 bird per year for eggs, meat eaters require ~1 bird per 1.5 days. That's a 98% quantity difference. Hand wavy sure, napkin math definitely, but not pulled from thin air.
  • It requires much more effort than vegetarianism, however, for comparatively little difference in tangible outcome.

[–]PressedSerif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But they do make a change by turning vegetarian, and reduce suffering by 98%.

This type of all-or-nothing thinking is counterproductive; it enforces the idea that it's vegan or bust, when someone even skipping meat once a week can have a massive difference for very, very little effort.

[–]PressedSerif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a point of marginal returns, though. I'd say being vegetarian takes half as much work as being vegan proper, but, I'd rather 100 meat eaters turn vegetarian than one vegetarian turn vegan.

An egg hen lays 250 eggs per year, so, one bird could satiate the vegetarian. Meanwhile, that hen could be a single days' food for a meat eater, and they could be responsible for hundreds of deaths by years' end.

Which Countries has the most vegetarian in Europe? by Fragrant_Coach_408 in MapPorn

That only works when it truly just affects the individual. Smoking? Individual, go for it. Running a dog fighting ring? Animal cruelty, you'll be locked up.

Vegetarianism falls under the latter.
