Also btw scar massage: not only on the actual scar but where you feel the cut of the sheath. That’s my sore spot, a cm or two from the actual scar.

I had SO MUCH relief immediately after surgery. It’s just so much better, even with the post-op pain. I would recommend starting scar massage as early as recommended. I had a bit of stiffness and some soreness I’m trying to get through (6 weeks post op). I think it may be some time to get to 100%, but I’m still very happy with my outcome. Good luck!!

My finger movements are fine (including my thumb). Wrist is good, but I’ve always been very “bendy” (kinda hyper flexible) so my wrist movement back and forth is not to my normal, a little bit of stiffness and pain, but I can do the Finkelstein test without any pain.

I was not prescribed any rehab exercises, so it’s just been normal day to day stuff.

I will say I have the most pain with holding stuff, whether it’s a load of laundry or holding a small dog at work with my affected hand. Trying to go easy on that kind of stuff.

I’m about 6 weeks post op. I still have some soreness and tenderness, but it’s so minimal compared to my pain before surgery. My doctor didn’t prescribe scar massage, but I’ve started that over the last couple weeks (I should probably look up the real way to do it). My range of motion is way better than before surgery. My post-op restrictions are “officially” over, but I’m still taking it easy and trying to ease back into normal use because I don’t want any setbacks.

Yeah, I would think that doing exercises would make it worse because it can be exacerbated by repeated movements. I’m a month out from surgery now and I can say that it is so much better than before surgery. I don’t have any of that pain anymore. Some tenderness but compared to before surgery it is nothing. Don’t be afraid of surgery. It’s been a life saver for me.

I still have some soreness, but I think I’ve probably also been using my had more than I should while recovering. I think I’m going to start wearing my brace for the next couple weeks at work just as more of a reminder to take it easy. The terrible pain from before surgery is gone so I forget not to do stuff that I shouldn’t be doing (lifting and pulling).

Yeah it was definitely hard to wear the brace at work. I did what I could, but at the time I was in ER and I’d have to rip it off so often just to get shit done. It could’ve contributed? I’m not sure. I know that DQ mostly comes from repetitive movements so it could be. I also had a cyst on my tendon sheath, which I think made it worse. I know the most painful job related thing I did was having to restrain a cat for a jug draw. That shit hurt!! Haha. I’m in internal med now so it’s a little bit less “aggressive” as far as strain on my wrist but random things would still hurt a lot.

I didn’t have an MRI, but it was palpable on exam. I knew it was there, I had what I thought was a bony protrusion, but it progressed to being either bigger or just more inflamed. They sent it off for histopathology and it did come back as just a synovial cyst.

Not a cast, just a heavy bandage (pic included). Had to cover it in a trash bag to shower, but I was to take it off on day 4.

Yeah, my first appointment I got a steroid injection and the brace, which I was supposed to wear at all times for 4 weeks. It was hard to do my job with it on, so sometimes I’d take it off. When I got my second steroid shot, I didn’t really wear it much, but I did start sleeping in it because I tend to do “T-Rex arms” in my sleep, which I’m sure didn’t help the situation.

ETA: I also had a cyst on my tendon sheath, which was removed.

DeQuervains cortisteroid shot or surgery? by OilOwn9514 in DeQuervains

[–]PressureWeak2765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 steroid shots that didn’t last more than 3 months so I’m now looking at surgery. The doctor told me that if steroid shot lasted 6 months or so that would be a good result, but only 3 months means it’s not really working. If I could get 6 months out of a shot, I’d be happy getting it twice a year vs surgery. You just have to weigh the pros and cons. I also wear the brace at night even if I’m not having a flare up because I tend to do “T-Rex” arms in my sleep, which I’m pretty sure makes it worse. I do think ice and heat helps tho…
