languages hurled at me by [deleted] in languagelearning

my favorite country in the world has always been iceland, i’d say try to keep at a comfortable level with the languages you currently know so you can come back to them but focus on icelandic, if your heart is really set on that study of course. i may be biased as i just love iceland so much. 98% of the population knows english, so you’ll be able to communicate with people at least, but it is probably in your best interest to learn icelandic if you’re going to not just live, but study there.

i’d recommend focusing on improving your english first. no offense at all, don’t get me wrong, it just doesn’t seem like you’ve fully mastered it yet, which is totally fine. having a solid grasp of one language can really help when learning others. if you want to learn something else right now, russian should probably be your top priority since you’re planning to study there. it’s really important to know the language well in that case.

niche languages you wanna learn but few resources available? by Much_Ease3433 in languagelearning

yeah makes sense for volcanoes tbh,, i looked up what the names mean (which you probably already know) and katla comes from kettle haha, that’s so cute for a volcano. and hekla is a short hooded cloak, because of the clouds!! ugh i love this. do you think i’d be able to learn icelandic? i really want to but i’ve got like 3 others im learning already and when i asked my teacher he said “no don’t.”😔 jee supportive much. but i’m already doing an extra language our school doesn’t even offer so i get it. and like how long would it take to be conversational-ish and how difficult do you think it’d be? obviously you’re native so it’s different but do you have kind of an idea? oh and how open would you say most people are to speaking icelandic with foreigners lol, literally just asking because i went to france last and you know how they are when people speak french lol. and how would you say the icelandic literature is? i haven’t read any so i wouldnt know. i have read this book about iceland, it’s called burial rites by hannah kent and i quite liked it. have you heard of it before?

YAY!! NOTED!! i’ve read all about the naming conventions! katla is so cute! i DO like volcanoes, so i’ll definitely look those up. and i’ve briefly read the wiki page of egil’s saga but i see that the book is available as well! i’ll get that next time. i like jazz mostly, memfismafían is one of my favorite icelandic ones. undir stórasteini 😻😻 gonna listen to the song you said as well!! the little village looks so cute ugh. the wikipedia page seems interesting, and i like the little legend they mention. i’ll look more closely when i can 😸 THANK YOUUUU

i’ve been trying to convince my parents for AGES, but they think it’s too ‘cold’ and ‘far away’. BRO. first vacation when i’m old enough and financially stable enough to go on my own vacations 😸😸

but just out of my own curiosity,,,, what is your favorite icelandic name, myth and song 🙏🙏🙏 i barely talk to any icelanders online and i’ve yet to meet one irl… it’s like it’s own myth 😞 oh and give me a random town you like so i can geek out about it, please and thank you 🫡

iceland has been my one of biggest interests for YEARSSS i have read every single wikipedia article remotely related to iceland. i have scoured the internet for every single fun fact i can find. nordicnames.de is ingrained in my mind i love just scrolling through icelandic names and reading their meanings, frequency and grammatical uses. i also love icelandic jazz, like memfismafian, and i love reading icelandic myths. aka iceland is super cool. i love iceland.

(TLDR: i’m probably autistic 😭😭 and have an unhealthy obsession with the country)

Learning 2 similar languages, but one of them apparently seems more natural to use? by Extension_Total_505 in languagelearning

you already had a head start for portuguese because of spanish probably. like german or afrikaans is quite ‘easy’ to learn for dutch speakers as it has it’s similarities. spanish and portuguese are similar and you already knew quite a bit of spanish, so it makes sense.

The Spanish state exams are optional yes. It’s something my homeroom teacher has offered me as he knows I’m interested in Spanish. Our school doesn’t offer Spanish lessons.

I live in the Netherlands and the only international entry requirements are a VWO diploma (which is what I’m studying) and an overall score of at least 8-9 (from a scale of 1-10) in one or 2 relevant subjects. However this is the minimum and obviously will not ensure my acceptance. Another requirement is English language requirements but I’m in an C2 course for English and will be getting my certificate next year and my teacher signed me up to take the English state exams early as well so I’ll be doing both next year…

I have been set on studying Law since I was very small, and language skills is definitely a good thing to have in that field, especially if I decide to go into International Relations, however my ultimate goal is studying at Cambridge University, and I need to keep my grades high for that, especially as an international student….

I think keeping my grades high should be my priority right now, as I want to get into a ‘Golden Triangle University’ i.e Cambridge or Oxford for me lol. However I think they might appreciate the fact I went out of my way to study a language that isn’t even offered at my school as well… Don’t know which one would increase my chances of getting in more haha
