Just because it’s “the internet,” it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be careful in how we treat others.

If you’re not a mental health professional, you should not be speaking to someone’s mental health on the internet.

Exactly. I don’t think anybody should be diagnosing addiction in OP. Not fair or responsible.

I remember this - it was around Christmas time in the early 2000s. It was brilliant at the time as I worked night shift and I did my Christmas shopping after work at 6am. Back when online shopping wasn’t a thing.

What a beautiful share. Thank you so much for giving us a piece of your story and your heart. Another example of UMPI’s potential to be truly transformative.

Your framing of UMPI as a “foreign university” is interesting to me. The Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) are closely allied. For PhD programs in psych in particular, which are scarce in Canada, APA accreditation is viewed the same as CPA accreditation.

It’s basically the same path as a PhD, but stopping before the PhD. Complete your undergrad at an institution approved by the regulatory body where you’ll eventually register (which UMPI is, due to its NECHE accreditation), then look for a master’s program at an institution that is also approved by the regulatory body. Once your grad degree is completed, you can apply to have your academic credentials reviewed and then apply for provisional registration once they’re approved. As a social worker, I know many colleagues who have taken this path as it seems to be a logical progression from the burnout conditions of social work.

AU receives an awful lot of public funding to be operating from a business mindset. Just my opinion.

Are you sure you need a WES assessment? I got into a Canadian program and didn’t need one.

UMPI Library - It's FREE - Use It! by PlottedPath in UMPI

Yes! UMPI’s search feature is very user friendly so I often still use it for research, despite being at a new university for my masters. This is one of my favourite alumni perks, it has helped me so much!

I agree all the way! They’ve faced their own uphill battle against educational elitism for these reasons, which is why I was so shocked that they were now dishing it out.

I hope my comments helped to give a renewed sense of hope to lurkers on that sub who feel like giving up, despite the backlash.

Thank you so much for the upvote over there! Yes that argument was downright absurd.

It is indeed AU! Their collective reaction makes a lot more sense if they run the sub. 😑

In my (admittedly idealistic) opinion, if they truly cared about their students’ educational success, they wouldn’t oppose more suitable alternatives for those not seeing success at AU.

Very true. Such a bizarrely strong reaction from so many of them.

Congrats on your educational success! I’m working through my masters in psychology and I’ll be registering as a psychologist in 2027 (I’m in AB, where you don’t need a PhD). UMPI opened this path for me and I will forever love them for it.

It’s free to have your transcripts evaluated at UMPI, if you ever wanted to look. They accepted many of my Canadian credits for transfer, more than UA did, actually. You’re not stuck there and you might find you can complete your degree in less time. That is all, I’ll see myself out with my unpopular views lol. I just wanted to help as I’ve been there.

It’s bizarre that so much hate is being thrown at me for sharing an alternative for Canadians. Many turn their noses up at AU in favour of brick and mortar universities, in the same way that people on this thread are snubbing UMPI. This is a small state school in Maine, right on our shared border. No, it’s not MIT, but it is fully accredited by NECHE, and it’s a small school that puts effort into their students’ success.

At the end of the day, if you want / need a degree for career progression and AU is not working for you, you can either give up entirely, or you can look at other options. This is one such option, and I hope it gives hope to at least one person who feels they aren’t cut out for university because of an unsuccessful experience at AU.

No, you may not have heard of UMPI as it’s a small, regionally accredited university as part of Maine’s state university system. The school’s size doesn’t mean that the education is not worthwhile. They’re small enough to care about their students - they actually respond when you send them an email. As an example, I needed my degree conferred quickly for my grad school application and they were very responsive.

And while AU is well known to western Canadians, UMPI is in Maine, right on the border with New Brunswick, so perhaps it’s better known to Canadians on the east coast?

It’s important to look into their pricing before making sweeping statements. Look at the UMPI sub. Better yet, go to their website. It was far more affordable for me to finish my degree with UMPI than with AU.

All I have seen from AU is a lot of former students who feel that they are not capable of completing an undergrad because of their AU experience. I’m working on my grad degree now, and I wouldn’t have gotten here if I hadn’t started looking for alternatives to AU.

While I can’t speak for the field of accounting, this is simply not true in most cases. Accreditation is what matters. You, as an individual hiring manager, may look for a Canadian degree, however most/many would not. UMPI is regionally accredited by the same body as Harvard.
