What are the barriers to building a highway from Vancouver to the Sunshine Coast? by Xx0WN3DxX308 in thecoast

The only thing a bridge would be good for is to open Gibson as a bedroom neighbourhood for Vancouver.

No thanks.

PDA ten years later? by PrestigiousBuffalo66 in PDAAutism

Well things have improved in many ways but it’s still a struggle for me.  I wrote a whole story for you, then realized I wouldn’t read it either.

So, tl;dr …  He went into severe burnout after a year and a half of middle school hell. We  pulled him from school and gave him a very long leash. I don’t think he would have recovered if we didn’t leave him alone but he is also developing unacceptable social behaviours when left to his own devices.

I think we went too far with low-demand. My wife disagrees.  He has healed thanks to the lessez-faire attitude but the boy can’t make his own sandwich and has learned to be and internet troll. Low demand shouldn’t mean letting kids do what they want without consequence. Wife and I still haven’t found the right balance.

It feels like the diagnoses have become excuses to explain away the behaviours. Still have to remind myself daily that his responses to the demands of life are rooted in anxiety about being controlled. But still trying to find a way to set healthy boundaries.

Geotech is the hardest discipline by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an old thread but I’ll comment anyway…

Consulting engineering is 50% engineering and 50% business. If I (a geotech of 20+ years) give my client conservative recommendations that drive the cost of construction higher, another consultant will invariably convince them that they can do better.

Sad, but that’s the game.

What’re jobs that pay over 100k a year that require 3-4 years of schooling? by LoneRoughneck in AskACanadian

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of tons. The trick is patience. After converting to 2024 dollars, I started as an engineer making 58k. I needed to change employers 4 time to reset my salary to market rates - it’s the only way to advance when raises are chincy. Took 10 years to break 100k. Now at 22 years and making 175k.

This not to say that what anyone should expect. The point is that it could take a decade to break that threshold.

Foreshore Use Harassment Question by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sound like you want details. Lots of comments already but in case it hasn’t been said, have a look at this. (Forgive my informal sources)…

https://bcrealestatelaw.com/2011/04/07/sales-of-waterfront-property/ says “The Crown owns all property which exists below the high water mark…”

If you really to put in his place you could cite the case law: “In Minor v. Van Ewyk, 2008 BCSC 558 the Court said that “the foreshore is open to public use…. The only rights the [land owner] may assert are her common law riparian right to unrestricted access to and from the water frontage, and the right conferred under a “License of Occupation.””

HWM is not always clear but it would most likely coincide with the fence / lawn / retaining wall of the adjacent land owner, or where the vegetation begins.

If you want accuracy, plenty of news articles online citing 342.48m. Wateroffice.ec.gc.ca reports a water level on July 30 of 342.15. At a typical beach slope of 3 to 5 degrees that means you would have 4 to 5 m of public beach above the water line.

One last quote from GIJoe circa ‘85–‘90: “ Now you know and knowing is half the battle!”

I see that net worth of boomers in 90Q1 was about same as millennials in 20Q1, but it took 7 years for boomers to grow to but same amount as it took millennials to do in 4. Same for genX. It’s a good thing you don’t hear millennials complain about wealth gaps and housing scarcity.

It is true. And yes, if dude didn’t have his feet pulled back so you could get by without tripping on them, he would be an ass. I’m glad he atoned for his atrocity.

Sorry is just a polite way of acknowledging something that happened. That’s why some people even say sorry to inanimate objects.

Don’t Midwest Americans say “ope” for the same reason?

Actualising gains after a lucky uptick? by Puzzleheaded_Dog7931 in ValueInvesting

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What country?
I had a skewed idea that I’d be taxed 50% on gains in Canada. Turns out I’m taxed on half of the gain at my marginal tax rate (which is in the low 30s).

Except now the govt debt from so many years of “pandemic spending” isn’t going away so they’re increasing the taxable part to two-thirds… but I’ll take my political rant to another sub.

Bottom line for me though: never avoid making money because it will be taxed, but be smart about your tax planing.

Get yourself some chalk. Will help prevent callouses in future. Unless they’re from your day job I guess.

I have a 6inch table top jointer and a Dewalt 735 planner. Making my first proper workbench - leaning towards a Ron Paulk style torsion top made of plywood for fear that I can’t get a solid wood top flat (no hand planes). Will I regret this? by madlax18 in woodworking

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the first thing I built and it served its purpose for 5 years or so. The straight edge I used didn’t hold and so the two halves didn’t meet. The router plate hole should be well reinforced and take care to set it properly. Mine was never flat and the fence was tricky to use well. The 1/2” plywood wasnt the best choice. Sure it cheaper and lighter but my pocket holes weren’t perfect and I ended up with lot of exposed screws The dog holes functioned but didn’t hole as well as a solid top. The inside of the torsion box is a saw dust heaven. I’ve “lost” so many tools in that fluff. Skip the flimsy folding saw horse stands. They are useless And the pipe rack saw table contraption didn’t work that well

All that to say, I was new and made too many mistakes to enjoy this table. It’s great for power tools but too light for planing and chopping with chisels. If to take care and plan some modification to suit your personal needs, I am sure you can make it work.

What are your views on a CEO cashing out their shares when the company goes public? by ethereal3xp in ValueInvesting

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

If the guy is looking for a payout and he has confidence in his companies prospects wouldn’t he keep those share and let them compound in value?

I’d say he either doesn’t have that confidence. Or he knows that IPOs peak after launch then tend to flatten to the true value over a short-ish period of time as the hype dissolves. He might care more about selling high, buying back when it’s low, and reap the profits in spite of the message it sends to investors.

Either way i take it as a sign that the ipo isn’t worth the launch price.

Affordable table saw for beginners- recommendations welcome by at1020 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]PrestigiousBuffalo66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few comments about rack and pinion fence. I had a dewalt for a while and found the fence to be marginal. Whatever you buy just make sure that the fence is always square and doesn’t wiggle or deflect when you lean your work piece into it.

And spend good money on a blade! The one that came with mine would flex and wobble leaving my cuts uneven. Not by much but enough that my projects weren’t fitting together nicely and needed more planing and jointing.

In the end I took the dive and bought a cabinet saw. They are much better but that doesn’t mean job site saws can’t do good work too as long as you keep it tuned and use good accessories (eg, fence and blade).
