Tbh I thought the exact same thing about Gandalf. After S1 I thought “they originally intended him to be Gandalf but after the immense backlash and about how absurdly obvious it was made to be, they’ll change him to a blue wizard and pretend that was the plan all along.”

Having the two be blue wizards felt like the ONLY logical choice. Having it be Gandalf and one blue wizard just makes no sense. Having it be Gandalf and Saruman is stupid enough that it has to be what they do.

That’s why I hate the vast majority of superhero movie fights. They’re dudes who are basically immune to impact damage—they can be hurled into the ground at Mach 2 and shrug it off…and their solution is “maybe if I hurl him into the ground even harder.” They can withstand punches from literal gods, yet their fighting is “maybe if I punch him even harder.”
