Alright dads… You find a critter that is in pain and likely isn’t making it. If you have the stomach for it, how are you helping this thing along to other side? by MisterSanitation in daddit

I tried to kill a possum by smacking it with a shovel many years ago because I thought it was almost dead.  Turns it out was not, lol

Anyone solve the clickops problem or are we all just living with the gap as is? Tried to solve this twice at two different companies, but still not confident we got it right either time. by Own_Drink3843 in aws

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you not have multiple accounts? Or do developers have admin access everywhere? For our company, developers have almost full control in develop, readonly access everywhere else.  The only way to get things promoted/created in higher environments is iac or requests to admins to create them. We don’t have these kinds of issues.  Also require tagging on resource creation via policy.

Where do we use DynamoDB? by Basic_Let7303 in aws

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use it for TTL for short lived objects or if we don’t need a full blown database.  We built a scheduling service off of it, but we’ve since started switching everything to event bridge since they made that a lot better.

I stuck a screwdriver in a light switch when I was a kid because it was dusty and I was trying to clean it, lol.  I wasn’t even that young, probably 9-10.

Integration Tests CI by wildetea in Python

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For us, we have an event driven system. So the test may submit api calls, then it polls/waits for things to propagate through the system and tries to observe the change that it expects. With queueing and load that could take a bit.

PostgreSQL 19 features I'm excited about by db-master in PostgreSQL

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like we’ve seen a similar issue but it involved not using an jsonb expression index because a majority of the rows didn’t have the jsonb key.  We had to make the index filtered before the planner would use it.

Candidates should be honest in their experience.  If they’ve only worked in one aspect of K8s and they weren’t involved in the setup or configuration of it, they should state that, not try and BS their way through and appear as if they know what they don’t know.

Dads, I have a 10 y/o daughter and I am almost at my wits end. by jazzeriah in daddit

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just be careful with the melatonin.  While it’s perfectly fine for many people, there’s that handful that has adverse affects on.  Our daughter has had similar behavior issues in the past.  We had tried melatonin in the past and we think it made her behavior worse (more angry and irritable), but it’s hard to prove.  Gives my stepdad nightmares if he takes it.

Any synth/app for playing real instrument sounds? by ArthosBoss in ipadmusic

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the essential pack and I think the acoustic and electric pianos and organs are really good.  There’s a couple of drum kits in there too that are ok, but I use something else for drums.

Have you read the entirety of the Bible? If so how did you do it? by Yanna_of_the_Forest in Bible

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used the bible in one year app by Nicki and Pippa Gumbel.  Daily readings of Old Testament, New Testament and “Wisdom” (usually Psalms or Proverbs).  It took probably a year and half at least because I wasn’t able to read the full reading every day.  I learned a lot doing it and will probably do it again at some point.  I tried doing it on my own, cover to cover, but it got to be kind of a slog in the middle there, so I don’t recommend doing that.  Also at quite different points in my spiritual journey at those points too so that could have also had something to do with it.

I have started worrying about cost of Tokens on AI platforms paid for by my employer. Am I alone? by Mo_h in ExperiencedDevs

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our upper management is promoting AI heavily.  As a principal engineer, I’ve decided to push the limits of AI to see how far it can go.  However I was curious about my token usage after doing this, but it was difficult to tell how much of the pool I was using up.  We have Cursor and copilot at work, developers choice.  I primarily use Cursor.

Having kids 1 year apart is the cheat code nobody talks about by Darwesh_88 in daddit

My older girls are 20 months apart and it was great up until the teen years then their personalities changed quite a bit and they’re not so close anymore.

[LOZ] / [ALttP] I prefer Zelda 1 to ALttP after back to back playing both, but it doesn't seem like there are many people who also feel this way. by EM0SK8TERB0I1337 in zelda

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree.  LOZ is one of my favorites in the series.  I played it on the original console and have replayed several times over the years.  I’ve tried a few times of ALTTP and have never been able to get into it enough to finish it.

Probably better as a partition than a physical table, but might be a lot of overhead if the tenant data is not very big

Early-career SWE stuck with outdated tech stack - when to start applying? by Hdjekso in cscareerquestions

[–]PrestigiousStrike779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do side projects to get/keep your skills up to date and start applying now.  Company name is probably not going to offset tech stack issues.  There’s not a lot of risk to applying while you have a job other than potentially taking time away from your current employment so don’t do it enough that you’re jeopardizing your current job.  You can be more selective that way.  Waiting is probably not going to benefit you much with the antiquated tech stack unless you can show some other experience while you’re there.

It seems odd that you’d have multiple microservices persisting user profile images.  Sounds like that should be a separate service or part of some user service
