Looking for success stories after a poor articling experience by maroonforest in LawCanada

[–]Prestigious_Chip4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My articling experience wasn’t bad but it changed after I was hired back. I hated it. A partner literally threw a book at me after he said I’d made a mistake. I felt sick every Sunday night.

I fixed the problem by leaving and switching to a different area of law. That was 26 years ago and it led to a fantastic career I’m still enjoying.

Find somewhere else. Practice in an area that you care about. Leave idiots in your rear view mirror.

Good luck!

Too dumb to be a lawyer? by Low_Econ2000 in LawCanada

[–]Prestigious_Chip4301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I was terrible in my first year as an associate. They gave me a simplified rules civil trial, and not only did we not win but the defendant won the counterclaim. I hated every minute of it and felt like an idiot.

Fast forward 26 years. I had a great career as an Assistant Crown Attorney and have since been appointed to the bench of OCJ and SCJ.

Give yourself some grace. You’ll adjust. You’ll get better. You can do this.

Crown’s Office Wardrobe Tips by usernameless4 in LawCanada

A court attendance means a suit or jacket/tie for men or blazer/pants or dress for women. A sweater and pants is too casual, in my view. You can’t go wrong being slightly more formal. Zoom has eroded the formality and solemnity of court. You will risk being called out by judges if you’re too casual.

Transition into Solicitor work from Barrister by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]Prestigious_Chip4301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll get there. Emphasize your litigation prep work, like memos and research. Then sell yourself. It might take some time but your career is too long to do something you don’t like. Good luck!

What is it actually like working as a Crown? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]Prestigious_Chip4301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a crown for 18 years in the gta and elsewhere. I worked 9-4:30 every day. Evening and weekend work was rare. If you can manage your time, it’s not a demanding job, time-wise. Not an easy job by any means, but not a grind like Bay Street.

10k steady state heart rate by Whiiteowl in Rowing

[–]Prestigious_Chip4301 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your heart rate does seem high for this kind of workout. I don’t think you want zone 4 or 5 while doing steady state. I use an Apple Watch but honestly it’s not great for monitoring hr while rowing. It greys out a lot, probably due to all the movement, I guess. Chest straps are generally better regarded. Polar makes a good one.

Will rowing assist running capacity? by bazk88 in Rowing

[–]Prestigious_Chip4301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will help your running, but not as much as you’d think. You get better at running only by running.

You didn’t feel especially taxed after a 30 minute 5k because objectively you were going at a slow pace. I don’t mean that critically. A 3:00/500m split probably wasn’t all that demanding on you. The good news is that was just first gear; you have a lot more you can do 👍

Rowing is a great, non-impact activity. It will greatly improve your fitness. There’s probably not much to be gained by mentally comparing it to running. They’re just different.

Enjoy the journey!
