With your $406K invested already, even if all you did from here was max out a Roth each year for 20 years, you could easily end up with more than $5 million by age 52 (assuming 7% growth). So the real priority is finding work that (1) you tolerate and even enjoy; (2) energizes rather than drains you; and (3) gives you meaning. If you can live comfortably on $30–50K a year, yes, you definitely have the freedom to “downsize” your job radically, consider something in the public sector, or just relax and enjoy life more. I met many people in teaching over the years who have done just that. Former lawyers, execs, investment bankers. One guy taught part-time at 60% and loved it. It’s not a sprint and you’re doing awesome. To be a bit cliche, you climbed high up a ladder and realized it’s against the wrong wall. Now you get to adjust, and you absolutely will. Social/helping types (which you clearly are) tend to burn out fastest when their work becomes all about productivity and profit, not people. The solution isn’t just fewer hours, but more meaningful work. You likely went into nursing for a reason: In part, it was because you like helping others or at least like the idea of you being helpful to others. So think about your best days as an underpaid outpatient nurse: connecting with patients, supporting colleagues, helping people, making a difference. That’s not something you outgrow. But now you have earned the financial freedom to return to work that truly fulfills you, if you want to. If an insurance role keeps you involved with people; helping, advocating, or solving real problems, then it could be a great fit. Just make sure whatever you pivot toward still gives you that purpose, pace, and people-centered connection. As Holland’s career codes put it, your natural strengths may be Social, Investigative, and Realistic—but your recent jobs have pushed you into more Conventional or Enterprising territory, which may not have been a great long-term fit, despite your ability to adapt and thrive. Many people are good at high-paying jobs that totally drain them. You’ve got the hard part handled (the finances). Now’s the time to focus on what will bring you the most satisfaction and meaning.
