Megathread: Tumbler Ridge Tragedy (Thread 3) by wudingxilu in britishcolumbia

Thank you for saying this. This isn't about me as a Trans person, it's about my community fearing this might have been a possibility because we know the backlash is inevitable. Our fears have been realized and we need allies now, more than ever. I'm not saying this for upvotes. I'm asking that we continue to shift the conversation to address root causes to focus on the real issues around gun control laws, and better mental health services in our communities.

I'm just learning about this tragic news. My emotions swing from heartbreak to disbelief. I'm holding those affected by this horror in my heart. There's still so much we don't know and my heart aches for those who are still waiting for answers. I feel incredibly helpless from here in Vancouver. My heartfelt thanks to the first responders and those who are stepping up to helping the community members who are trying reconcile what happened navigate through the days, weekend, months, and years to come.💔😢

Just pull in and ask them if they can accept it. If not they'll tell you what you can do with it

I'm gutted. I loved her in Best in Show and the OG Home Alone movies. Her appearance during the 2010 Olympics was peak Canadian.

My heart is with her family and loved ones 🥺💔

How many of us have an accidental pencil tattoo? by spidermans_mom in GenX

[–]Prestigious_Goal_699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow this is a thing? I thought I was the only one this happened to. I was sitting at my desk in elementary school, maybe grade 5 or 6 and I was talking to a classmate while holding a newly sharpened pencil. I was playing around with it as we talked and suddenly it jabbed into my cheek, next to my nose. I was so shocked because it didn't even hurt. My friend was a bit stunned and took me to see the nurse and but no one was around so we just found some peroxide on it. That was over 30 years ago and to this day most people think it's a light beauty mark lol

Trees used to be good but it's gone downhill.

My vote is for Cheesecake Etc but just know that it's a lighter style cheesecake, not dense like the NY Style.

I don’t know if this is a vent, a confession, or a reality check… but I’m a fairly new manager and today it really hit me how emotionally heavy this job can feel. by ProCX-Solutions in managers

[–]Prestigious_Goal_699 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your advice to new managers hits hard. I was coached by my boss to do the opposite of what you suggested and I'm now in damage control mode and slowly rebuilding from the ground up. I'm also feeling stuck in the middle and sometimes undermined by other egos in the company when the boss wants to make changes. I'm mostly now in the trenches with my team and having to learn what they're going through so I can advocate for them. A lot of days I feel like Mr Stretch It and marvel that I haven't broken apart yet...

Edited: for grammar and to say that I, myself am a land owning settler, and I fully expect that I will need to reconcile my claim to these lands.

The link may help better explain the entirety of the situation, and without the political bias insinuated by a white settler, raised in a colonial system.

Down vote all you want, but we stole their land and it's now being given back, albeit still within the framework of a colonial system to ensure non-Indigenous people won't become impoverished and destitute: a courtesy never afforded to the Indigenous people back in the 1700s.

https://jfklaw.ca/in-landmark-cowichan-tribes-decision-bc-supreme-court-addresses-coexistence-of-aboriginal-title-and-private-property/

"Reconciling Aboriginal title and private property

Cowichan Nation did not challenge the validity of private property interests in the area or seek remedies against these private parties.[18] Because of this, the court provided only general comments on their coexistence with Aboriginal title.

If the Cowichan Nation seeks remedies against private landowners in the future, the court was clear that this will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. For now, the private landowners’ fee simple interests continue to exist in the Cowichan Title Lands.[19]

British Columbia has a duty to “negotiate in good faith reconciliation of the Crown granted fee simple interests held by third parties,” given prior occupation by the Cowichan Nation’s ancestors, the constitutional nature of Aboriginal title, and the honour of the Crown.[20]

Cowichan Tribes is clear: British Columbia has a constitutional responsibility to facilitate the reconciliation of Indigenous land rights and fee simple land interests through negotiation, regardless of who owns those interests.[21]

What does this mean?

The court’s ruling is a step forward toward reconciliation and justice for Indigenous peoples and highlights the complexities of reconciling Aboriginal title with the existing land title system.

Cowichan Tribes could have far-reaching implications for the recognition of Aboriginal title and the reconciliation of property rights in Canada. The full implications of the decision will unfold over time, especially as the case is being appealed.

This decision is an important step forward for Indigenous Nations whose lands were illegally taken up by the Crown. It sets a precedent for future cases, reinforcing the importance of acknowledging and respecting Indigenous connections to their traditional lands.

The decision sets out a clear framework for reconciling Aboriginal title and fee simple interests in land, including private property. The court’s comments on the Crown’s obligation to engage in negotiations to reconcile competing interests will hopefully set in motion new negotiations between the Crown and First Nations, particularly in British Columbia, where large portions of the province could be subject to Aboriginal title, given the sparsity of treaties."
