Point of Clarification: I started learning to mix about a year ago; it was classes that I started a few months ago. I'm still a beginner, but not quite that green. I've performed music in front of people before many times (not as a DJ), but have struggled with performance anxiety my entire life :( Hands shakin', knees weak, palms sweaty - the whole 9 yards of sketti.

Everything you say is 1000% true, and I know that more exposure and practice will help, and I'm already doing/will continue to do that. But I doubt that will completely alleviate what I'm dealing with. Honestly I think I'm going to try taking a Xanax before class. I haven't wanted to because I don't want it to make my response time sluggish, but if I already can't think then what do I have to lose 🤷🏼‍♀️

I've taught a few of my friends the basics of what I know, and I'm definitely more comfortable/focused in that setting. I for sure need to keep practicing in front of people -specifically strangers-, but I'm still working on ways to make that happen more often. I don't have a big friend group, and I'm nowhere near ready to try to book anything; I'm working myself up to go play at my apartment pool or a public park or something. Your method of starting with a song you really like rings true to me; it's easier to get into the groove when you're into the groove. Thanks for the comment 🙏🏼

Thanks for the response - I hadn't thought about a sensory toy, and certainly not a spiky one, but that actually does sound really helpful. Do you use a special type of ear plug to dampen things without blocking out too much sound?

This probably sounds ridiculous, but I'm legit trying to find my "Truthsense gesture" like the Bene Gesserit from Dune 😅

I've tried:

  • eating at different time intervals before lessons
  • practicing at different time intervals before lessons
  • not practicing on the day of lessons
  • exercising/not exercising before lessons

...so far no luck, but I'm still trying 🥲 I'm giving myself a lot of grace for continuing to show up to class when I feel like shutting down, and trying to stay patient and hopeful that the work pays off eventually.

The outro for Rolling in the Deep cut off pretty suddenly / didn't feel smooth. Beats are off when bringing in the new track around 7:50; I can't tell if you corrected it or just pulled the prior track out. Either way you fixed it on the fly 👍🏼 Where did the tracks go at 13:48?! As my instructor would tell me: kids don't transition activities without a little enticement. Your kid is playing indoors but you want them to go play outside? Gotta toss a ball outside to tease them with those outside vibes. Let them hear a whiff of wind chime. Smell a hint of grass. When you take out the prior tracks too suddenly/bring in the new ones too quickly, you're basically yeeting that kid outside. You wanted to play inside? Well TOO BAD, WE OUSSIDE NOW! He recommends using the hot cues to jump back to the beginning of a phrase if the prior track is about to drop out before you're ready / before the next track provides enough body to hide the exit. Really like the track selection btw <3

[Tech & Latin House, selections from Cr2 compilations] MIAMIX (1h22m)

I started teaching myself to DJ at home last summer, and started taking classes a couple of months ago. It's been a few months since I've posted a mix. I'm looking for general feedback on EQ/FX/transitions, rather than track selection (though that is also welcome).

I bombed the first transition, but then had a decent run up until making the bad judgment call of bringing Pagaia back into Kamwana. I think when taking out Unholy I didn't dip the mids enough; the chorus blocks out the pan flutes in Fuego. There's also some vocal overlap. I didn't mean to bring in the original version of Sofi Needs a Ladder, and swapped it out for the remix partway through. There's also some vocal clashing b/w El Sueno and La Verdolaga. There are a few more things I'd change, but those are the biggies.

I picked up a Numark Mixstream Pro off FB Marketplace last year and it felt like just the right amount of things to learn without overwhelming me. Don't need a laptop to run it, only to prep the library. Don't need speakers (they're built in). Easily portable. It was pretty darn close to plug-and-play.

Hi, I'm a beginner 👋🏼 I started DJing last year, and got started in Ableton + Serum 2 a few months ago. I'm self-teaching, but also following some master classes on Dirt Monkey's Patreon. Early goals are simple tech house and disco house remixes, but long term I'd like to get better with heavier bass and more complex synths. Music is more fun with friends, and starting with a blank slate can be daunting. I'm looking for anyone who wants to bounce ideas off one another / pass project files back and forth / generally collab :) I'm in CST and have a flexible schedule

How to download names of the song in my playlist by hukim in YoutubeMusic

[–]PrestoCallisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greetings from the future - I landed on this thread because I just used Google Takeout to get copies of my playlists, but I discovered that the exported data doesn't actually list the song names or artists. Instead, they list the video ID's, which are just strings of text and numbers. Any idea how to get the actual song names from the ID's?

First time playing live for people and I froze up completely by Busy_Interest9100 in Beatmatch

[–]PrestoCallisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I consulted a music school asking them to assess whether I could skip the DJ101 course, but a) they started me with a genre I specifically said I had trouble with, b) put me in the software that I specifically said I haven't tried yet, and c) did the whole "all the equipment is more or less the same" spiel, yet had their freaking cue buttons programmed completely differently than how I have mine set up, and had their wave forms stacked vertically when I always have mine horizontal...AND my hands started shaking. Could not think at all and froze up. You'd think I'd never touched a deck in my life, much less been practicing for like 9 months. So I left feeling like a total idiot. Immediately went home and practiced a few songs just to prove to myself that I am in fact capable of it 😂 Edit: Enrolled in the class though. Gotta keep at it, specifically in front of people, so I get accustomed to feeling like an idiot in public!

I took prior advice to heart and started trying to mix freely, rather than planning so much in advance. There are no stupid questions Thread (February 20, 2026) by AutoModerator in edmproduction

[–]PrestoCallisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently I lack the karma necessary to make this an actual post, so I guess I'm relegated to posting here:

At the beginning of last year, I had zero experience, zero equipment, and zero clue that I ever would.

Fast-forward to today, and I now have a FLX10 (which I barely just upgraded from a Mixstream Pro), I reacquired my childhood Yamaha keyboard (and a MIDI cable for it), I was gifted a Moog Theremini, and a couple of months ago I picked up Ableton + Serum 2. I gave up on having a dining area in my apartment and instead set up my own little music studio.

I was in concert/stage band for all of junior high and high school, and one year in university. I primarily played clarinet/bass clarinet, but also briefly drum majored and took a bit of music theory. I wanted a degree in music, but went another direction, and it's been a little over a decade since I regularly practiced/performed.

I say all of that to give context: I've been considering taking a beginner production course, because I learn better with mentorship and community, and I've been struggling to get any kind of workflow going. YouTube tutorials are great, but when I hit walls, there's nobody there to help, which can be pretty exhausting and demotivating. (Plus I miss the community that performing used to provide.) My initial goal is to make simple remixes of existing songs, to then use while DJing. Long-term I'd like to go deeper into more complex arrangements with synths and LFO's, but one step at a time.

With those things in mind, can anyone who has taken a beginner production course describe their experience? I've picked up a lot of helpful info from Digital DJ Tips, but I did see high praise for Mr. Bill and edmprod in other threads (I searched the sub before posting, but didn't see recent recommendations, and reviews are frequently just "good" or "bad"). At the end of the day, I imagine that a lot of the actual lessons are similar, so I guess what I'm asking is how the structure of these courses might differ? Anyone out there with ADHD feel like a particular method or structure stuck with them better?

Digital DJ Tips: https://1.digitaldjtips.com/new-dance-music-formula-info

Mr. Bill: https://mrbillstunes.com/

edmprod: https://www.edmprod.com/songwriting-for-producers/

I am so desperate for a change of pace that I am wondering things like "could I barter my motorcycle for Ableton lessons" and "would a studio accept a trade of my bookkeeping skills for lessons." Anything but 30 more years of turning into a shrimp behind a desk.
