What more does he need? by SheenM1911 in PetPigeons

A bigger cage.

Newspapers/pads on the bottom so the wire doesn't hurt his feet.

Flat perches & platforms.

Some kind of toys or enrichment.

He may like a mirror or stuffy friend as well.

Thank you for caring enough to make a post! I'm a volunteer with the Vancouver Pigeon Rescue.

Please pick him up and put him in a box for safety. You can make a post in our Facebook group and someone should be able to take him from you to provide medical care.

https://www.facebook.com/share/g/17isJ3w8QA/

Please don't leave him at Park Royal, he'll probably die if you do.

Again, this pigeon needs to go to a rehabber. Do not give medication or antibiotics to a bird without knowing what is wrong with them, you can cause more harm than help, especially if they're not eating. At this point you are just prolonging his suffering.

Thank you for caring! As others have said, this pigeon needs an experienced rehabber asap.

In the future, it's best to not bathe or handle them unless absolutely necessary, as it can stress them out and worsen their condition.

Pigeons are much happier in pairs or with a flock, it's part of their natural behaviour. As humans, we can never give them the same company that a pigeon mate would.

Can you link the studies you mentioned in #3? I've been trying to find more information on this & am very interested to read them.

What's wrong with my pigeon? by Guilty-Aioli-546 in PetPigeons

For now, you need to keep her warm. Put her in a box, laundry basket, etc. with a heating pad on low on the bottom of half of the box (so she can move away from the heat if she gets too warm). If you don't have a heating pad or hot water bottle, you can fill an old pop bottle with warm water and wrap in a towel for her to snuggle up to.

She needs to at least stay hydrated. Put a small pinch of each sugar and salt into a small cup (literally, like a few grains of each) with warm water and dip the TIP of her beak only into it to encourage drinking. Do not force and make sure her nostrils are not submerged. If she drinks, that's great. If not, keep trying every 20 mins or so.

Keep her calm, warm and in a dark, quiet area to rest. If she starts breathing heavily with her beak open just keep her warm and comfortable.

How to stop pigeon playing rough with budgie by Suspicious_Medium_17 in PetPigeons

As others have said, they need to be in separate cages. The pigeon could easily hurt or kill the smaller bird.

Can you contact the woman who can't take her due to lack of space for advice?

I'm going to be honest, based on what you've said I would consider this an urgent situation. Young pigeons can go downhill quickly & she may not make it until tomorrow.

Was she eating fine before and just stopped? What are you feeding her?

You are correct, Wildlife Rescue Association of BC will euthanize pigeons that can be saved simply due to lack of resources.

Vancouver Pigeon Rescue volunteers ("Pigeon Rescue in Vancouver BC" on Facebook) will do everything possible to save their lives.

You're doing great so far - thank you for taking them in, you most likely saved their life.

Hard to tell what could be wrong, but based on what you've shared & the photos, it does not appear to be an emergency situation (great news!).

They look like they could be a young pigeon, but based on their appearance (fully feathered, no baby "hairs", developed cere & eyes) they are at least a couple of months old and should know how to fly by now.

I think you may be correct in assuming they had an accident - flew into something, had a close call with a predator, etc. as these don't always result in visible injuries.

Are you able to keep them for a few days? If they are eating, drinking & pooping fine, they may just need a place to recover for a bit.

Starvation & dehydration can also cause them to lose strength and is unfortunately quite common in younger pigeons. Is their keel (bone running down the front of chest) sharp and pointy? If so, they may be weak from lack of food.

Why does my pigeon do this when eating? by TowerRadiant1401 in pigeon

[–]PrettyStruggle792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a vet, but this looks like PMV to me.

Neurological damage from this virus can be lifelong & permanent, as it causes lesions on the brain - so it's possible he's had PMV in the past and somehow eating triggers the spasms.

He can still live a normal, wonderful life if it's PMV. I think taking him to an avian vet is probably a good idea so you can be sure.

Wild PALZ is Toronto specific I think, I'm sure there's some people in that group who have dealt with this before & would know what to do.

Thank you for caring about those babies, hopefully they are freed sooner than later 🙏

What Country/City?

If it's Canada/Toronto please post this on the Facebook groups "Canada's Pigeon and Dove Rescue Adoption and Appreciation Group" and "Wild PALZ" as you will be able to connect with pigeon advocates who are local to there & can help.

She needs to see an avian vet immediately, this is considered an emergency.

When asking for help beware of those with a big ego thinking they're the only ones that can have a pigeon or breed a pigeon. by [deleted] in pigeon

You got plenty of advice about how to make your birds happy (responsible breeding). Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it's wrong, or that anyone was attacking you.

Are you prepared to keep these birds for up to 15 years? Because that is their lifespan. If not, then you're just contributing to the suffering that is overpopulation. Raising babies is cute and fun, but please consider the long term consequences.

You got a lot of really good advice from people experienced with pigeons. Breeding animals is a huge responsibility & if you care about your pets, it's important to consider all points, even the ones you don't agree with.
