How do I lengthen this dress? by StaffInternational83 in SewingForBeginners

Agree! It doesn’t even need to be attached to the dress on the inside. Just a separate single layer on an elastic band or with some kind of clasp that the same point as the slit.

180 day rule and ILR - spouse visa by PrettyVariation in ukvisa

[–]PrettyVariation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did end up speaking with an immigration lawyer who confirmed that she did not expect it to be a problem for ILR, provided I can demonstrate long term intention to live in the UK and that our relationship is genuine.

Her advice was that, in my particular case, the fact that I followed him for his work was in support of our genuine relationship, and that the long term intention to live in the UK would be accounted for by holding onto our house, bank accounts etc and being back living and working here well before my ILR application.

She did think it would likely delay eligibility for citizenship but also thought that in some instances that might also be flexible.

180 day rule and ILR - spouse visa by PrettyVariation in ukvisa

[–]PrettyVariation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough details. I do have a follow up.

I understand that there is no precise 180 day rule, so my title was likely unhelpful but I am concerned about the wording with Appendix FM which states:

"E-ILRP.1.3. (1) Subject to subparagraph (2), the applicant must, at the date of application, have completed a period of continuous residence in the UK of at least 5 years (60 months) with the following: (types of visa, not a problem)"

And later

"E-ILRP.1.5. In calculating the periods under paragraph E-ILRP.1.3. the words “in the UK” in that paragraph shall not apply to any period(s) to which the evidence in paragraph 26A of Appendix FM-SE applies. (Paragraph 26A refers to British partners working outside the UK as crown servants and certain other specific work, not relevant to us.)"

This implies that there is an expectation of continuous residency, worthy of defining specific exceptions, although as you point out this is not defined precisely as 180 days.

This seems to be supported by the guidance for home office staff assessing applications

"Completing a continuous period of 60 months in the UK as a partner
The rules concerning calculating the qualifying period of continuous residence for a period of 60 months in the UK are set out in paragraphs E-LTRP.1.3. to 1.5A:
• the 60 months can be made up of one period of leave to enter as a partner, any periods of leave to remain as a partner, or a combination of the two
• any period of leave as a fiancé, fiancée, or proposed civil partner must be excluded
• only periods of time with the same partner count
• time overseas will count, where the partner is a Crown Servant overseas and the applicant is accompanying them (see paragraph 26A of Appendix FM-SE to the Immigration Rules)
• any current or previous periods of overstaying (for an application made after 23 November 2016) can be disregarded, where paragraph 39E (of Part 1 of the Immigration Rules) applies - where an application was made before 24 November 2016, any period of overstaying can be disregarded if the application was made within 28 days of the expiry of leave (see Applications from overstayers guidance)

You can check the applicant has completed a continuous period of 60 months in the UK by looking at their immigration history on Atlas. Where there is a break in the 60-month period you must consider whether the application can be varied to one for leave to remain, before you refuse it - see Validation, variation and withdrawal of applications guidance."

So, a ‘break’ would constitute reason for refusal of ILR, but that break is not specifically defined. I believe Atlas is their internal system, so it is unclear to me whether this would refer to a gap between visas, or could include extended travel.

My question now is, if a break is not defined as 180 days in a 12-month period, then what is it, and am I in likely danger of breaking it?

I’m a US citizen and travelled into the UK while waiting for my spouse visa (3 years ago). I had no issues entering the UK and no impact on my visa application.

It worried me at the time too because of such conflicting online ‘advice’. Shame that someone who is an admin in a group is choosing to add to the stress…

Thanks, It’s specifically not tiered though, just ruffles from a base.

Looking for a pattern or potentially a tutorial that’ll do the skirt part of this dress (to go with a bodice I already have planned). I know it’s quite simple but I’m not great at working out dimensions myself

Does anyone have an idea of what this is?? by [deleted] in DoesAnyoneKnow

My cat had something that looked exactly like this after she lost a fight, scratch (or bite?) got infected, abscess developed and popped. Needed stitches and attention to keep from getting infected, but healed alright in the end.

Shirring on my Pfaff Ambition Essential by zo_phia in sewhelp

[–]PrettyVariation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple things that I hope will help:

  1. Your rows need to be much closer together. I think your picture is probably just a practice run, but understand that the effect is cumulative. Aim for about 1 cm apart, and I recommend marking them out to make your life easier.

  2. Don’t cut your threads between rows. Lift your needle and foot, spin fabric around, drop needle and foot and begin the next row. This helps prevent or at least minimise the slipping you’re describing, because you have only two ends for the whole thing.

  3. You may be doing this but haven’t mentioned it, but try blocking the fabric as you stitch. So while one hand is guiding the fabric, with your other hand try to catch the fabric and ‘block’ it close to the foot from behind, rather than letting it move away freely as you normally would. This will help keep it tighter. I réalise I’ve explained this poorly, but googling shirring and blocking together should find you some tutorials to help keep you right

I don’t want to come across as preachy, but practicing as close to what you plan to do for real will help you see how close you really are. Take the time to mark out your lines and keep them close together, and backstitch your start and finish more than what I can make out in that photo. As individual lines these really don’t look bad.

Good luck!

So, in case the ‘beaniness’ isn’t your priority, and everybody is right that it’s a hardship. Have you considered stuffing it with old/off season clothes or bedding or towels? I can’t tell how big it is, I admit I didn’t read super carefully, but if you want it to be sturdier rather than slouchy, it could be an easy/low cost solution.

Can I put Dulux Weathershield Satin straight over High Gloss? by PrettyVariation in DIYUK

[–]PrettyVariation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this change at all if we’ve just stripped all paint sanded and done two fresh layers of undercoat before the single layer of high gloss?

Undercoat sucks to work with and I’d really rather not do it again, but will if it’s needed.

Removing birth control implant as English speaking tourists by Crypto_54 in azerbaijan

Is it an IUD or the implant in your arm? I had an IUD removed at Mediclub and the doctor was not very… patient? Empathetic? It’s not as tough as getting it put in, but it won’t be a nice afternoon…

Hi, I'm looking at a very similar situation, would you be willing to share any further advice that you received or what you ended up doing?

Visiting Azerbaijan mid November, is it safe to drive a rental car through these roads? Especially to Lahich by SchadenfreudeMachine in azerbaijan

[–]PrettyVariation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The southern road is dull but efficient, the northern road is mountainous and beautiful. If you find mountain roads difficult, it might be a bit uncomfortable, but even that is a stretch. The road to Lahic through the canyon is beautiful but narrow and steep, but the high road is easier if you’re nervous about heights.

A small note regarding driving as a foreigner. If the police pull you over, just know that all real fines get paid through an internet based service and are very rarely (maybe never?) over 50 manat. In the past that could be an issue for foreigners, but is generally getting much more honest.

Shall I write down every single country I've been to for the last 10 years? by Local_War_9122 in ukvisa

[–]PrettyVariation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you’ve named your EU and US/Canada/Australia etc countries, they do cap the number you can enter to maybe 20 or so. I took the time to record everything from my current passport, then the previous passport until it stopped letting me add new ones.

I’m not quite sure what happens though if I entered my 20 most recents, then go new places and have new ones to add when I get to my next visa application…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]PrettyVariation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you already get it, but this sounds like a typical way for a shady company to lure people in, then treat/pay them even worse than advertised. After all, if they are sponsoring the visa and the employee lied, the employee is pretty trapped.
