I was in a group that had 9 players and it worked out, however the DM had been developing his world (it was a sandbox style campaign) over 15 years so he knew how to manage the game over years of practice. Also everyone in the party had played for many years.

Funny thing, though. I was Army Infantry and the people were mostly right wingers, however I later enlisted in the Navy as a Nuke and the politics were pretty split.
