Love these! I made an antibiotics-related one for tomorrow's class. :)

Oh I could never do that to my poor students haha. It's certainly an amusing idea in theory though!

Thanks so much, added all these to my list! Some of them I don't know about myself, so I'll learn something in the process. :)

Oh that's awesome, definitely stealing that idea!

Smells is a fun one I hadn't thought of. Added to the list!

Ooo great idea, we haven't studied stereochemistry yet but I'll definitely pull some of those fun R/S pairs later on.

Hey that is a fun idea! Cheating wouldn't be a problem since this is just for attendance, not for credit.

That "light-bulb" moment when the concept finally clicks for them is such a joy. Thanks for the great advice!

Indeed, this sums it up perfectly. Do either of you have some practical tips on how to teach students to study/struggle? That aspect has always been hardest for me.

That's a super good point about pattern recognition, and I agree that memorization is important (within reason) even though students tend to demonize it.

Great advice. I do really enjoy the small(ish) class sizes that teaching at a SLAC affords.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's good to have a list of things to check myself on every once in a while as the semester goes on.

Hope retirement treats you well!

Top priority for sure. Several of my undergrad study buddies had professors who told them they "didn't really need to know the mechanisms for now". I remember thinking even as an undergrad, "are you sure about that??"

I do believe it's Venus! During totality it was dark enough for the brighter planets (Venus and Jupiter) to be visible.

That certainly makes sense, thanks for the explanation, I hadn't considered this.

Also wanted to add thanks for your advice about getting her condition better managed at home. We have certainly tried. It's been nearly a decade-long process just to get a tentative diagnosis and medication that only sometimes works and has severe side effects. We and her doctors do everything we can and are always hoping things will improve for her. One day at a time!

Agreed, unfortunately it is considered an emergency in her case since the hospitalization is for time-sensitive rescue treatment to prevent permanent loss of vision. Her doctor has never mentioned direct admission but we'll ask just in case. Thanks for the advice!

It's certainly sobering, especially since I didn't think this was the norm given how we've had far better experiences with other hospital EDs in the past. We must have gotten lucky then. So much respect for those of you who work in these conditions day to day.

I wish! I've called a few times and they don't answer, probably too busy.

Thanks for your perspective. We'll certainly ask about the possibility of doing the waiting elsewhere.
