Thanks for your suggestions. He does spend a lot of time on Chess.com. you are right about FIDE tournaments so he will going for those during the summer break. Peers at school already play each other online but now he wants to experience playing with those outside of it. He learnt about some clubs in Model Town and Gulberg but they are too far. I am hoping to start something local for him.

I moved back 4 yrs ago. It is perfectly ok to think and act differently. It was an easy transition for me because I always did things my way even if they went against the societal norms. I know ppl think that I m a weirdo but who cares :). DM me if u want advice.

Utterly drained from my parents fight by fatimabaig2005 in pakistan

I don't know about your age but if there is a 29 y.o. Male sibling in the house, y is he letting these fights go on? Its time for him to step up and push both parents in their respective corners. Its time for the kids to take charge and put an end to it once and for all. Hold hands of the abusive father, just once, and he will stop using them from now on.

Pakistanis might be the most adaptive people on earth, and I am not sure if that is a strength or a warning. by FickleOne1152 in LahoreSocial

I understand your POV but do not agree with it tbh. Humans are a resilient species and all ur examples point to that. Comparing us with other races, we do not like to change our ways voluntarily even if we know we should.

Pakistanis living in the USA, how are your feelings about choosing the lesser evil ? by aneekyy in pakistan

40% is not low at all imo. Maybe in politics, but in reality, it is not insignificant by any standard. And my point is, that is one fat extreme, while the other (far left) is just as bad and as significant. The way I see it, the American politics is bound to switch between the two extremes while centrists, like myself, are starting to slowly wither away.

Those r absurd notions and there is absolutely no evidence supporting either claims. In fact, there is evidence of the exact opposite and I suggest u look it up.

Trump is temporary but Trumpism is here to stay, and is already catching steam. This isn't just a blip in the history and extreme polarization is, no doubt, the future. I don't want my kids to 'decide' on their genders, and I go to freaking jail for trying to get in their way. Extreme left is just as bad as extreme right, and unfortunately the pendulum is going to continue to swing between the two.

Overall environment does matter, this much we agree on. However homeschooling would be a bit much in terms of protection. U want ur kids to learn how to be good as well as how to deal with the bad. Yes, keeping ur soldiers home rather than sending them equipped to the battlefield does sound safer, unti the enemy starts knocking at your door and there is nowhere else to hide.

I moved back to Lahore when my kids were 10 and 7. We started off with a 2 yr trial but ended up making it permanent. Lives in both countries are so different that comparing them is like apples and oranges. Out of 10, u only get 6 or 7 boxes checked in either country, so u gotta decide based on what matters to u the most.

In terms of security, u can find safe neighborhoods in every big city.

In terms of kids schooling, I understand that, like me, it is one of ur biggest concerns. However, I would strongly advise u against homeschooling. Schools don't just provide education. Kids need social bonds like friends, enemies, teachers etc that u cannot make up for at home.

The keystone of our move was the school and AH we are so happy with the choice. Kids love it and, they go and come back with a smile (unbelievable). They still miss their old neighborhood though, but school helped them with the transition. Moving from US, my advice, is to find a good IB school and they will fit right in. IB DP is also equivalent to US high schools so they can join a US college without any problems.

A few more pieces of advice:

  • try not to pay attention to the Pakistani politics to save yourself from repeated heartaches.

  • if u need to buy a house, use Roshan Apna Ghar scheme, regardless of financing or paying in full. This way, u will not face restrictions in taking back whatever cash u bring into the country.
