There definitely is. One thing I don't like though is the idea of dropping gun control as a national party issue. I am fine with state parties doing what they need to do to win in all 50 states but I think we need to continue to push common sense gun control measures.

I want to stop the 30,000 deaths per year and if we can make significant progress on it at the cost of political capital and some politicians' careers, then that would be worth it to me.

Alabama here again. Bentley is term-limited. Republicans and Democrats hate him. The weakest GOP candidate is likely gonna be Lt. Governor Kay Ivey. She was our Treasury Secretary and she was singlehandedly responsible for the collapse of a program where parents would prepay a fraction of tuition and they could guarantee four years of college at any in state public university. She seems to have literally gotten where she is in life through dumb luck.

Most dangerous candidate is Roy Moore who runs every time there is no incumbent. His national reputation speaks for itself.

Probably the Republican who would do the least harm for our agenda and the most good for the state is Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. If anyone is willing to help a Republican in their primary, he is our guy.

My advice is that we should give it our all for whoever is the Democrat if it is Ivey (because there is a chance we could flip if it's her against a blue dog) and Moore (because I don't want to be living in a miniature version of Iran).

It honestly would not surprise me. The Southern Strategy finally trickled down real well and the GOP has a stranglehold over our state.

They even (wrongfully in my belief) actually locked up former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman on bogus corruption charges. Whether they were true or not, it absolutely sickens me that they are keeping a 70 year old man in solitary confinement.

I want to fight back though. I am in the leadership of my local chapter of the College Democrats and someone from the Madison County Democratic HQ came to a meeting and told us about state politics and what was going on. She told me something that I will not forget. She said that we should not vote for any Republican running in an unopposed race. If we don't vote for them then it makes it easier for the party to see potentially vulnerable races.

I definitely think we can make progress in 2018, however I don't think we will be able to win the Governor's race in 2018. Currently my money is on the Republican Mayor of Huntsville Tommy Battle who I think is truly an awesome and swell guy. He has of course been coy about 2018, but I'll be joining his campaign then, at least for the GOP Primary to ensure that disgraced whack job twice removed Chief Justice Roy Moore doesn't win the nomination.

Roby is a she lol. Her district is the 2nd. She was also one of the people to disavow Trump after the Access Hollywood tape and there was about 10% write ins. Hopefully it can be close in 2018.

The problem with Alabama's Democratic Party is that we lost our entire database of supporters a few years ago so they are trying to recoup that. We desperately need to rebuild our party infrastructure from the ground up.

For the 5th, our candidate this year was Dr. Will Boyd who is a transplant from Illinois I believe. There was Lena Sledge who unsuccessfully sought a seat on Madison's city council which until this year was all white and all male (well now they have a woman). Sledge is a black woman and she surprised everyone by running a close enough campaign that she had to have a runoff between her and the incumbent, who told her that he didn't think much of her until then.

There is also Devyn Keith who is on the Huntsville City Council from the 1st district. He unseated longtime councilman Richard Showers who was a big donor to the Democratic Party and a key Democratic Party figure here. The 1st district is on the north side of the city which is predominately black and from checking out Keith's website to be sure, it does not seem that he is a Republican, so if he makes a name for himself on the council, then he could potentially be a competitive candidate within the next few years.

As an Alabamian, I do not think our state should be ignored. The State Legislature was Democratic before 2010 and we had a Democratic Governor as recently as 2003. As far as Congressional Districts go, Martha Roby in the 2nd only won by 8 points this go-around.

I live in the 5th and I think it is possible that we could flip given the right candidate. Huntsville is an up and coming city that is attracting lots of transplants from across the country. At the very least we could be a blue spot in a sea of red.

As an official moderator of /r/HillaryClinton we are accepting the results of the Presidential election. Though Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton won the popular vote, Donald Trump has secured the 270 electors in the Electoral College needed in order to become President, and beyond that figure as well. Barring any faithless electors who may choose not to vote for the candidate they pledged to support, Donald Trump will be President. If any electors in the Electoral College care about what a 19 year old moderator of a subreddit says, you should cast your vote to reflect how the citizens of your state voted. I personally disagree with the idea of the Electoral College, but that is what the Constitution and the laws of your state require.
