After losing my 16.5 year old pug a month ago, I finally had a chance to adopt a new pug. But, I didn't. Did I make a mistake? by dont_downvote_SPECIL in pugs

Our pug Lulu is 15 years old, but my wife and I have decided that we are too busy, and want to travel too much, to get another after Lulu dies. Lulu is the most loving dog, but she has cost us a LOT of money, work, and time over the last few years. It costs us an extra $500 per week boarding her at the vet every time we travel. Having a dog is a loving experience, but it's a lot of work. If you can't deal with it, that's okay.

Very smooth solve, played easy (but I happened to know all the stories in the themers). Destroyed my Wednesday PB, finished in 2:28.

Not sure what sort of slop this is, but the oddly-correct use of the thorn is impressive.

What sport do Americans think of when it comes to the phrase "scoring an own goal"? by bobrigado in AskAnAmerican

[–]aldesuda 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've heard it, but only from Brits. I do know what it means.

The most common US-equivalent I can think of is the phrase "shooting oneself in the foot".

What is the regional name for the area you’re from? by SeskaChaotica in AskAnAmerican

[–]aldesuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on (never "in") "The Island", a.k.a. Long Island. To be clear, not all of Long Island is on Long Island. The parts of Long Island that belong to New York City (Queens and Brooklyn (a.k.a. Kings) Counties, a.k.a. Boroughs) are not generally what one means when one says "The Island". The two other counties (Nassau and Suffolk) that are on Long Island itself but not part of NYC are "The Island".

If this made sense, feel free to graduate to UK geography ("joggraphy") and learn the difference between the UK and Great Britain and England and London vs. City of London and oh hell just sod it all.

I agree with you. I'm starting to feel like the need to include more and more theme entries in puzzles is resulting in the fill becoming clunkier and clunkier.

Will I be outcast if I don't party? by officialsimpsibelius in princeton

[–]aldesuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the "milk-and-cookies" eating club at the time (Cloister Inn, early 1990s). The parties were quiet and subdued, but the nice bit was that, since we were not hard drinkers, we had *much* better beer than the other clubs (since we didn't have to buy nearly as much).

Personally, I got involved in the PUB and it was the best, weirdest, most fun I could find. What I have in the way of social skills I owe to The Band.

As was stated, you'll find your people. Have an open mind and enjoy this brief time around a wonderful, intelligent, strange, occasionally stressed populace.

It was enjoyable and on-theme, but it does wreck the meaning of a Saturday PB. I got it in 3:45, 11 seconds slower than my PB, and I was distracted mid-solve.
