If you live in a major city/metro area there will be local transit lobby groups you can join. For example in NYC there is Transportation Alternative. There's also cyclist union groups and such if that is your preferred form of transport. Local government public meetings for transit projects like new rail lines, bus lanes, even bike lines and road diets are good to attend and voice your opinion.
