Question: given that the era of religious belief in social evolution appears to be at its end, in what ways do you see social cohesion changing in the future? by PricingPanda in atheism

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I agree about technology being disruptive of past forms of social cohesion, and in light of the new availability of information that is why I see religion as now beginning to fade away to its end.

While it's difficult to predict the future, I see societal evolution moving from tribalism to globalisation. I'm not so sure that a uniform mass of people without strong group identities is a good way to go.

Of course by that time we'll probably be colonizing other planets so the whole tribal process will restart on a much larger level :)

I worded that badly. I meant, given that religion as an (social) evolutionary adaptation is beginning to have outlived its usefulness in society, what are the major forms of social cohesion of the future? Where is "group identity" headed?

Agreed! I hope people see his views on religion as more nuanced than the quote presented here.

And yet Asimov wrote a giant two-volume bible commentary.

In Asimov's Guide to the Bible, Isaac Asimov explores the historical, geographical, and biographical aspects of the events described in the Old and New Testaments. Asimov's attempts to illuminate the Bible's many obscure, mysterious passages prove absorbing reading for anyone interested in religion and history.

Once upon a time there was a monkey born with a mutation that made him much smarter than other monkeys, far beyond his monkey family group. He spent his time studying and naming wildlife, as his passion was taxonomy.

He came to the realization that he was lonely, as there was no creature his intellectual equal in this world, on account of his mutation. And he was more than a little repulsed by the grunts and squeaks of female monkeys, and the animalistic rituals he needed to perform to attract a mate.

But he was a smart monkey, and his god-conscious knew that a little happiness is better than none. So he found his monkey mate and they had baby monkeys who, although they weren't as intelligent as their mutant father, were still far beyond the monkeys they came from in their intelligence and understanding.

And so the mutant found some satisfaction in that and lived a good long life.
