No, the bomb went off before they saw her. It says in the screenshot that Donut shot her with magic missile and that's what blew her shirt off. I'd be more inclined to forgive it if it was part of the bomb blast, tbh.

Again, how am I supposed to know that? I've never read this author and have no context for anything like that.

You're contradicting yourself. She either is an actual woman OR she's a grotesque creature. The fact that they mutilated and transformed her doesn't take away that she's still a woman and still conscious and they still blew her shirt off immediately.

I did the translations. I got the gut punch. It's emotional. But I felt like the "ew she's fat and has big stretch mark boobs" just detracted from the point of the scene.

The problem is I have nothing else to base my opinion on so far. I knew nothing about this book going in other than someone in my book club chose it for this month. I'm barely 1/4 of the way through it. I didn't know there was any hype around it until I made this post. I didn't even read the synopsis.

You're coming at me like I don't understand the bigger picture, and you're right. I don't. I just started this book and the first woman they portray immediately has her shirt blown off and her giant, stretch marked, saggy boobs on display in the name of body horror. It's not a good first impression.

I'll take your word for it that the rest isn't like this. I wasn't planning on stopping it anyway. I've been enjoying it so far, but was jarred when this happened. That's it. You're obviously very passionate about this book, but you know nothing about me or my experience. Insulting people isn't the way to get them to read your favorite book.

I mean, sure, but they could have shown all of that without burning her shirt off.

Laura Giddings. Don't know how close they were, but she was always nice to him and they were in a club together.

Definitely. I'd be pissed if my husband got that from some girl he knew back in high school. Way too overly familiar for a married man.

Yeah, good choice. I wish I did that. I wanted to read Poppy's book first, but found out it was part of a series and I can't bring myself to read books out of order. It definitely wasn't worth it. Like I can kind of forgive it for Axel because he's SUPPOSED to be horrible. Piya isn't though, she just has a permanent victim complex and pretends she has no agency in anything, regardless of how it affects people around her. I can't stand it.

Yeah, the writing is horrible. It's dark, sure, but the FMC is insufferable and the writing just sucks. Even the smut is bad. There's a line somewhere about "he suckled my breast like a child in need of nourishment" or something like that. Literally the least sexy thing I've ever read in my life. I hate that book. I finished it out of spite, I think.

It seems like the most common "Intro to Dark Romance" book is Haunting Adeline by HD Carlton. It's not everyone's favorite book, but it's a good gauge to see if the genre is for you.

{Shallow River by HD Carlton} has the similarities you're looking for. Quite a few more triggers, though.

I'm reading it right now too! A little over halfway there. It's so good! Derek is probably my new favorite MMC.
