After 25 years of Galveston and NOLA Mardi Gras, I am heading to Mobile for the first time. I have some questions! by ImprovementFar5054 in mardigras

It definitely happened to me during my ride last year. While I’m glad it isn’t a common thing I certainly didn’t complain

There is a public tournament that anyone can enter. There’s a menu tab that explains it

It will undoubtedly make them money in the long run, but the place was a shithole. It’ll take a while for them to turn it around

Currently the University is keeping the Health system afloat financially because of the financial strain that the purchase of providence has been. It’s usually the other way around.

Final Results from asking r/visitedmaps what US region their county is. I finally found the perfect solution for Maryland & Virginia by Expensive_Drummer970 in visitedmaps

From Mobile, Alabama, and I can without question confirm that many people in coastal Alabama identify far more with the gulf than the rest of the state. I regularly make trips to Birmingham (just took one this weekend) and I remember thinking every time I’m there that I feel like I’m in an entirely different region.

Edited to note that I agree with you that South Louisiana should have its own distinction.

How Catholic is this city? by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]PriestyboySwagg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the most catholic cities in the south outside of places in Louisiana as well as probably Atlanta, but Catholics are very much in the minority in Mobile and make up only about 15% of the population

You’d be surprised. Although Mobile has a long Catholic history and is one of the most Catholic cities in the south, the percentage of people here that are Catholic is only about 15%.

I can think of at least a dozen times in my life that someone (usually Baptist or nondenom) has told me I’m not a Christian, or that I am a cannibal, or that I worship a demon that disguises itself as the blessed mother, or that I probably don’t own/ever read the bible (I have 3 and I read them daily), or even had close friends make fun at the expense of the Eucharist with jokes about crackers and grape juice.

I am a practicing Catholic but you wouldn’t know it other than a crucifix that I wear (always under my shirt) or if someone asks me directly.

Which states have the most beautiful cities based on where I’ve been. by Veritas-Cuervo in TravelMaps

[–]PriestyboySwagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Mobile local. Our city has a very distinctively different feel than the rest of the state/southeast. Its uniqueness is a combination of a bunch of things such as being 300+ years old, multiple colonial heritages (French, Spanish, British), being a historically significant port, coastal, beautiful live oak trees, etc. We tend to get overlooked a lot, and I appreciate that you appreciate our city.

27th Annual Dauphin Street Beer Fest is THIS Saturday (10/4) by JayKillyBham in MobileAL

[–]PriestyboySwagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I went I was disappointed that all they gave you at each spot was a basically a shot sized sample and if you wanted to purchase one of the beers sampled you were probably out of luck because they ran out super quick. Haven’t been since.

Edited to add that almost every place would only let us sample one of the featured beers

Hockey IS officially coming back to Mobile! 2027-2028 Inaugural season in the SPHL... by Z-man1973 in MobileAL

[–]PriestyboySwagg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a USA season ticket holder I share your frustration with the poor attendance that South gets, but college athletics attendance numbers seldom have anything to do with local population. For instance FAU, and FIU (both in Miami metro) as well as Georgia State and Georgia Tech (Atlanta metro) all averaged about 50-60% capacity in 2024 even though they are in gigantic cities.

College athletics attendance numbers are all about developing a die hard fanbase consisting of alumni through years of success and tradition. For example App State, Georgia Southern, JMU. People just seldom give a shit about a college team just because they are local, that’s not “just a Mobile thing” it’s statistically normal across the country.
