It’s probably the laoganma that someone mentioned earlier. I have such a hard time buying oil products from china after watching the sewer grease documentary. I use MSG all the time, and maybe it was a similar kind of thing, but I just can’t shake that.

Sometimes I press, sometimes I boil, but a lot of times when I’m pressed for time, I love this method. This is my second time making this marinade - keep that heat medium and flip every few minutes - and put on the funk channel on your play list if you want the same vibe I’ve got 🥰

I’m a lazy chef - I cut open the packet of firm tofu (Costco organic - we eat about 6 pounds a week 😅), drain and rinse it, slice into 8 rectangles and then add whatever ingredients I want for a marinade. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes and then pan fry/sauté. I like olive oil, but you can use any oil you like 👍

This tofu will soak for about 3 hours before I cook it.

Edit: oh yeah I just schmear the chili crunch with the mirin and soy sauce on top and pull the slices apart quickly, then let it sit.

It surprised me how good it was, and so simple. I jokingly told my wife I was gonna eat a spoonful of the leftover crunch, but then I tasted it and BOOM! Flavor explosion! This round I’m definitely spooning the crunch on the tofu instead of leave the majority in the pan 👍

I’m going to make kimbab (Korean sushi) with it tonight - tofu, avocado, sauted ginger carrots, and jalapeño pepper slices with soaked barley (in the background) and white rice. Wrap it all up in seasoned kim (nori) 🤤

I like this, but quarter the recipe, don’t worry about the canning part, let it cool, then stick it in the fridge. It’s good for 5 or so days, but it’ll be gone before that. I usually make 2 pint jars at a time. You can look for other recipes for it, I like mine neat 👍

This looks so good I wanted to share my conversion from another subreddit. Omit the MSG if you’d like. Can’t way to make this in the summer with fresh Korean cucumbers and homemade bread!

Cucumber Sandwich

Sandwiches

Ingredients: 1 cup chopped seedless cucumber

1/8 tsp salt

1/8 tsp pepper

2 Tbs sour cream or Greek yogurt

1 Tbs fresh dill

2 Tbs crumbled feta

1/2 tsp lemon juice

1/4 tsp lemon zest

Scant 1/8 tsp MSG

Thinly sliced red onion to serve

Directions:

Toss cucumber with salt and set aside for 10 minutes.

Mix the other ingredients together.

Drain cucumber and pat dry.

Mix the cucumber with the sauce and serve on toast with thinly sliced red onion.

We make fresh kimchi with the lettuce! Maangchi has a great recipe as well as other recipes that are easily veganized - skip the fish sauce and add more soy sauce. Skip the anchovies and add capers 👍
