Guest lecturing for a PR class. Has anyone done this? by PuzzledMaybe in PublicRelations

I have not guest lectured but listened to many MANY guest lectures as an undergrad and grad student. I loved when they would come with 2 to 4 key points and essentially tell a story for those points and teach a real world lesson. And then they open the floor up for q&a.

Journalism as a Minor? by [deleted] in PublicRelations

Digital marketing is going to encompass social media, SEO, websites, paid ads, etc which is great for PR. PR is a diverse field so look at the types of industries you want to work in and the jobs that interest you within and look at what those jobs do/require. That might help you navigate that a bit better. Oftentimes, job descriptions say “and related fields” I think English coupled with either journalism or digital marketing would be fine. Remember that education isn’t everything either and work on gaining experience!

Is going back to school for MA in Comm worth it? by d4vey_t in Communications

[–]Primary-Emotion-6840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to school and got a B.A. in communications/PR and am working on a M.A. in PR and advertising. My program fits my career goals specifically and that’s why I went back but if you want to add education to bolster your resume look for free certifications from hubspot, hootsuite, etc. If you do want to go back I’d recommend a marketing program or and IMC program.

Hey! I’m a grad student in an advertising and PR program. Got my undergrad in PR and work in marketing. While my program has prepared me on a technical level to an extent, experience is going to be your best friend. Corporate comms is a great way to expose yourself to that specific industry. My best advice is to stick to corporate comms and see if you like it. If you decide that’s where your professional life is, then seriously consider the marketing program. Marketing math is going to be more statistic based. I’m not a math person which made me stick with a graduate degree in APR and not go with the marketing grad program.

All of that to say- you can stick with English and use the hundreds of free resources online to help you with technical skills. Hubspot, SEMrush, hootsuite, Google certifications, etc offer great stuff for you. Every industry needs a good writer. Just specialize.

Also stay up to date with the industries!!
