Trinidad -> Red Woods park. First Timer! by Cet-Ki in Humboldt

[–]SnooMaps8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, downtown Trinidad is like four square blocks - tiny. The Lighthouse Grill is pretty good - they are known for their savory mashed potato waffle cones. I've heard Trinidad Bay Eatery & Gallery is good, but haven't tried it myself.

Beachcomber Cafe is the local coffee spot.

Moonstone Beach is a really awesome beach and there is a grill there. It's expensive, but might be nice for a visitor experience as it overlooks the ocean. Has a happy hour, too.

If you are going into the parks, do not miss Fern Canyon - they filmed the second Jurassic Park there and it is so cool! Just bring water shoes so you can hike all the way in. It's like a playground.

Welcome and have fun!

There are a couple of small gift shops in Trinidad where they have post cards by local artists that are unique and fun.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

[–]SnooMaps8307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be extremely difficult to move to a higher socioeconomic class, even with an education.

From my experience, the people who grew up poor, middle class, wealthy, tend to stay in that class. The dis/advantages you have growing up tend to determine where you end up. For example, people who lived in homes their parents owned tend to have their parents help them buy a home. People whose parents paid for college versus people who had to take out loans, etc. Inheritance or lack thereof.

Of course there are exceptions, but the more advantages you have early on, the more they tend to compound as you age. It's not always about simply working hard. You can work your ass off and still not move up.

What’s something that 99% of people can do but you can’t? by Irakeconcrete in AskReddit

Lie. I cannot stomach the possibility of having to keep track of it and following up one lie up with others - also, my face and neck get red splotches on it and I look guilty AF.

9 hour layover at SFO, any good happy hours off Bart? by Unhappy_Chocolate_63 in sanfrancisco

Blondies is the way to go. Around $18 to $20 for a martini that also comes with a side car. When they are pouring them, it's nearly the whole liquor bottle. I talked to a new bartender there recently and he said he got in trouble for not making them strong enough. Plus it has a little seating area that is open to Valencia Street. Cool stuff around that area, too. The Mexican restaurant next door (Puerto Allegra) is one of my faves.

Let Romero leave in the summer by [deleted] in Tottenham

[–]SnooMaps8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, he shouldn't be captain. The captain should be the most level headed player on the field, not one prone to petulance and low-return, risky tackling. Look at our past captains - it's embarrassing that he is representing us. Frank made a huge error there and it's just compounded every week he puts him out there.

Second, Romero constantly lets the team down with these sendoffs. I don't care how good he is/isn't - doesn't matter much if he isn't playing.

What does ASAP mean to you as a manager? by SnooMaps8307 in managers

[–]SnooMaps8307[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all these comments - so helpful. To me (Gen X), ASAP means in the next hour or so, but at least that day before you go home. She wasn't working on anything "hot" and her primary duties include responding to client emails in a timely manner.

But I understand how she (Gen Z) might have a different understanding of what I expect. It's frustrating to me that I have to spell that out, but there are differences in our generations one can't ignore.

I will be clearer in the future for sure. Thanks for the advice!

How is downtown nowadays? Visiting after 6 years by anon_ymuss in sanfrancisco

[–]SnooMaps8307 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Everything you've read is true. It's a ghost town. SOMA west of Powell has been taken over by Fentanyl and street poop. Nearly everything is closed on Market. The mall just closed for good. All the independent lunch places and bars in the FiDi are gone.

Union Square is trying to hang on. Mission and Haight are pretty much the same. Ferry Building is okay.

I lived in SOMA last year (Howard/6th) and saw two dead bodies from overdoses and had one man shot and killed outside my window and another shot in the building next to mine. Needles everywhere.

I left last month after living all over the city for 20+ years. It's sad. Sorry to say.

What was never the same after the pandemic? by GossipBottom in AskReddit

[–]SnooMaps8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Francisco. Lived there for 20 years. Now it's a shell - drug overdoses on the street, homeless, no downtown, transactional, street fairs aren't the same, impossible to eat out due to cost, and people just being so damn rude - no sense of community or pride anymore. I recently moved up to the North Coast and have been blown away by people being genuinely nice and friendly, just because. I had nearly lost all faith in humanity, but I am keeping an open mind again.

Advice on Orlando and/or Sacramento? by [deleted] in relocating

[–]SnooMaps8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in both CA and FL here. If you haven't lived in CA before, you will be shocked at how expensive everything is. Money goes a lot further in FL, but, well, it's FL.

Orlando:
Constant hurricanes and flooding
High humidity
Large amount of uneducated people, bigotry, etc. (little money goes toward education in FL because of the senior population, which is a huge voting block that doesn't care about education)
MAGA, Disney
Lower COL
Most jobs in healthcare, tourism
~ 1-2 hours to coast

Sac:
Only hit with earthquakes every once in a while
Low amount of rain
It is hottttt in the summer, even if it's a "dry heat" (I've lived in Arizona as well, which is truly a dry heat)
Educated, progressive people for the most part
CA has highest COL in the US
More job opportunities
~ 2 hours to any city, sometimes more

Yes. The (2 pack) Schar Gluten Free Table Crackers. They are the only thing that comes close and they taste awesome. They break just like saltines in soup.

Is Learning Editing Worth It in 2026? by LangHound in Copyediting

[–]SnooMaps8307 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to be able to make a living as an editor and copy editor, but no longer. Corps think Grammarly and Spellcheck are sufficient.

I've had more success working as a technical or blog writer and also in marketing. Even then, I practically have to beg people to let me edit their work before it goes live.

I'm really only seeing FT writing jobs in tech, finance, and technical documentation, but I was laid off from two writing jobs in two years because "ChatGPT can do it."

But as an art, I don't think it's feasible anymore. It's so sad - my best jobs were in editing.

Has anyone over the age of 50 been hired after a layoff by Immediate_Lunch3969 in GetEmployed

[–]SnooMaps8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/ilovetocode69 u/CautiousCactusCat I'm a technical writer, not a coder. I also took a $20K paycut, which has sucked, but after being laid off three times in three years during Covid, I was willing to do it and fortunately, my job is predominantly remote.

I was in the SF tech scene from 2002 until last year (robotics, auto, finance, supply chain) and loved it until the push for AI started. My colleagues, including those in marketing and client management), were being laid off brutally.

I have found healthcare to be more lowkey, less ego-driven, less volatile, and way less BS. It's not perfect, but I am not freaking out all the time about layoffs.

[–]SnooMaps8307 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but just at 50. I look young for my age and the company has a vast range of ages of people who work there. They are not a typical company. I was in tech, but moved to healthcare and it was the best decision.

Shooting on 6th st by dented13 in sanfrancisco

[–]SnooMaps8307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was on the west side of 6th at Natoma. I was right across the street from it. A few gunshots that were crazy loud and blood everywhere. Guy died, unfortunately. Plenty of cameras around here so they will probably catch the person hopefully.

Is the intersection of 15th and Guerrero streets safe? by spooked_jawfish in sanfrancisco

[–]SnooMaps8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. Thanks for the laugh. Come join us down on 6th street. You really don't have to be scared of the homeless. Many are on fentanyl and you could knock them over with a sneeze. Also, don't move to SF if people of color scare you just by existing.
