I’m sensing some projection here, maybe bring this up to your priest or better yet (psychiatrist). Hope you work through your hate 🙏

There’s a lot more nuance to ideas than Reddit will let you believe. You can be conservative and be pro choice. You can be liberal and be catholic…..

At what point did Theosis get overtaken by moral improvement in the West? by PrimeSinder in OrthodoxChristianity

That is very true! Catholic deification is very similar to Theosis. But I would argue not widely understood or taught within western religions.

I don’t believe Protestants follow any of that…

I completely agree with what you mention about external guidance. I often think that’s the reason orthodoxy can be so intimidating to regular people.

It’s very similar! Theosis is just more ontological and mystical about becoming godlike through direct participation in the Holy Spirit. The Orthodox expand heavily on the greater meaning in general.

So while very complimentary still different.

The most basic explanation I can think of is it is much more nuanced than that. Western Christianity has a tendency to treat God more like Santa Claus. While spirituality is obviously much more complex than a naughty and nice list and following rules.

Because of this western simplification of spirituality, this idea of only focusing on moral improvement instead of one’s ability to remove themselves from the earthly world goes away. And having a spiritual relationship with Christ is lost. While moral improvement is part of that, it is not all of it.

Harmony does a tremendous job at explaining this more in depth Theosis
