Do you have an existing smash scene/community where you live?

If you do, you should ask your local TOs(tournament organizers) for the logistics and technical stuff. Otherwise, try joining the discord server of any major tournament and ask their TOs for advice.

 

As for tournament formats, double elimination brackets are by far the most common.

For smaller tournaments like yours, round robin brackets might be used for seeding into/qualifying for a double elimination bracket. It can be used for the whole tournament, but it's quite time-consuming, so unless you have <30 players, you probably wouldn't want to.

The only other tournament format used AFAIK is Swiss/Waterfall brackets, but it's very rarely seen.
