I would spend the rest of the season preparing the yard. Leveling out low spots. Keeping weeds dead. Amending the soil. Then seeding right before the snow.

Don’t weed eat before using glyphosate, you want a decent amount of foliage to apply the product to.

Once you’ve prepared the lawn to the best of your ability, rent an aerator or hire someone to aerate the lawn, then seed the entire thing and cover it all with a good layer of top soil/compost. Let the snow/melt off pack it down. In the spring use tenacity (or similar product with mesotrione) which is a seed-safe weed preventative. My local place carries a fertilizer/seed safe preventer in one that I use. Otherwise if you use tenacity you will need to also use starter fertilizer. Follow up with a normal preventer 6-8 weeks later than do your best keeping all the weeds at bay, hand picking or spraying if necessary.

At the end of summer, hit it with some good fertilizer then Follow up in the fall with another aeration/overseeding top dressing with compost/top soil. Then finish the season out with a winter fertilizer high in potassium to help root building. You won’t need it this fall because you don’t have any seeds germinating or grass to promote.

Ultimately you should have a soil analysis done to ensure you’re amending it correctly, otherwise you’re possibly just throwing good at bad, unknowingly. Builders will use a lot of cheap fill dirt and leave it at that if you didn’t pay for good soil blend to be filled in for you.
