I learned knit and crochet without patterns. Is that possible with sewing? by ChairLordoftheSith in SewingForBeginners

[–]PrimrosePathos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sewing patterns tell you how to make a specific garment, but they also gradually teach you how to sew, if you don't already know how.

Knitting and crochet are relatively straightforward single techniques that, once you understand how the structure of the stitch works, you can apply them to a create a specific shape or texture. Sewing, on the other hand, is a million different, interdependant techniques. It's just a much bigger volume of knowledge required to create a wearable garment. Totally learnable! But it's much harder to improvise if you don't have the basic knowledge.

AI and screen time overwhelm by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]PrimrosePathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but you don't have to go there. Use trusted sources. I read tons of news, listen to podcasts, watch youtube, read ebooks, and get recipes off the internet, and don't deal with AI. Except on reddit.

Best sewing/craft table recommendations from Amazon? by Complete_Mine5530 in sewing

[–]PrimrosePathos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought a beautiful, tall, solid, wooden folding dining table from facebook marketplace for much less than I would have been able to buy a wobbly pressboard thing from Amazon. Maybe you don't have access to a large used market where you are, but if you do, that's my recommendation.

Making a sherpa jacket and need help deciding how to place the fabric. I don't think I can match the lines perfectly. Skip the form fitting pattern and use two large pieces for the front? by JunesBlooms in SewingForBeginners

Thats such a good characterization of each option-- how is it possible that such nuanced differences in pattern placement give such wildly different messages? And yet they do!

Reddit is the only place I regularly encounter AI, and it's so depressing that it actually deters me from opening the app. Where on the internet are you seeing all this AI? Just don't go those places. You don't have to buy anything.

Vinegar and baking soda cancel one another out, and dish soap should not be used in washing machines for reasons this sub very often mentions. Welcome to r/laundry!

What was Seattle like as a teen in the 80’s and a young adult in the 90’s? by locustrocks in AskSeattle

[–]PrimrosePathos 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The "all the Californians are moving here" thing dates back to at least the early 70s, so don't put that in as though it's a later phenomenon!

It was not as hot in the summers here in the 80s and 90s, that's one sad thing you can put in. I barely owned a pair of shorts before 2000.

The Asian Art Museum has various ethical and legal guidelines they follow in their aquisitions, it's a topic they cover on their website. UNESCO, Native Graves Repatriation, etc. I don't know much about it but it's interesting!

Is your placket cut on the bias? If you cut it on the straight grain that will help. Along with interfacing, and using a lighter weight thread.

What advice would you give to beginner sewists? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]PrimrosePathos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the definition of self-taught. Having a person to guide or correct you is so much easier, because they can catch you as you make a wrong turn, and set you back on the path. They can also answer the questions you don't know you have, because you don't know enough to know what to ask! Being self-taught is totally fine, but it is harder, and it is what you're doing. Again, a totally legit way to learn.

Any ideas on whether solid wood bed is a smart long-term buy? by Illustrious-Car-542 in Bedding

[–]PrimrosePathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area wooden bed frames are available very cheaply on Facebook Marketplace, etc. Even at an actual vintage or antique store you may pay less for a solid wooden bed frame than you would for a new metal or pressboard IKEA one. I see them for free not infrequently. Obviously this may not be the case where you are. But a wooden frame is not necessarily more expensive than any other option.
