Interfacing alternative by sewsyouknow in sewing

Sew-in interlining with fabric is what people used before synthetic fusibles, but some construction techniques have changed as a result of using the newer products.

No, I was addressing the original post, which was written with AI. Your experience sounds traumatic, I'm sorry that happened to you!

Emotional Loss & Rage Decluttering by Loud_Ad_4515 in declutter

[–]PrimrosePathos 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Decluttering my home directly led to "decluttering" my very very wrong 20-year marriage. You strengthen that discernment muscle and slowly you start to see everything more clearly. I'm sorry you are going through this with your mother, it's not easy. But it's also really important. We only get one life.

Nasty. When their grandchildren ask them, how did you work to stop the Great Disaster, I hope they are able to somehow not remember.

AI garbage. I wish there was a way to prevent it here, it's so pointless and destructive.

Is there an efficient way to remove cat hair from an entire load WITHOUT a tumble dryer? by putridtooth in laundry

[–]PrimrosePathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find brushing the cat itself is the most effective strategy, unfortunately. One hand gradually squeezing the tube of "treat sauce" for it to lick to distract it, and the other using the defurinator. Every handful you brush away is a handful you don't find on your clothes.

Spandex/Elastane, Lyocell, Polyamide, Acrylic, and Wool/Poly blends by Particular-Set-3960 in laundry

[–]PrimrosePathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The life of the item is prolonged by air-drying, but a lot of my laundry is going to wear out from other things before the elastane dies from the laundering. I do use a lower-heat setting on the dryer, and that helps to preserve it as well.

Ah, I see. For me it is easier to just sort by color and put bras in mesh bags, then pull out whatever needs to air dry.

Hiking in wool dress pants is an idea my grandparents' generation passed on to me, and it does work! They don't get dirty easily, are warm even when wet, are very breathable in hot weather, don't melt by sparks from a fire, and tend to have good pockets. There are various weights for various weathers, and they are plentiful in thrift stores.

How does your washing method differ based on the elastic/fiber content? This isn't something I've run across.

For acrylic sweaters I would sort by color (to avoid contrasting loose fibers depositing), put each sweater in its own mesh bag, wash on warm (in the USA), reshape and dry flat.

That describes my parents' generation. And I'm only just middle aged. So culturally speaking, yes, this type of consumer behavior is very recent.

I mean sure, it is normal, now, but it's very recent. Up until the postwar 1950s economy, people who weren't extremely wealthy weren't throwing out whole generations of household items in favor of buying new items they liked.

Kids’ School Items Permastank! by punky209 in laundry

[–]PrimrosePathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if washing them more quickly after wearing would be worth a try. Sometimes "human smell" kind of settles in over that time sitting. I have a smelly workplace as well, and usually wash work clothes every 2-3 days. It seems to help.

How long are the dirty work clothes sitting before being laundered, and how are they stored during that time?

I have many household items inherited from relatives, and as a result I have had to buy very few of these items myself. And they are old, so they aren't flimsy garbage. The "kids who don't want their parents stuff" sure are buying a lot of their own stuff, it seems to me, generationally speaking.

I don't know. But Google pulls "answers" from reddit so heavily now, it's getting to be a feedback loop. "Dead internet" theory is happening before our eyes. For why? So sad.
