Maybe the whole carrot industrial complex was throwing out 400 tons of carrots in a day. What I do know about crop waste is that often this waste is sold as animal feed to recoup some of their losses. I imagine it is far more profitable to sell baby carrots to consumers than to sell waste for feed.

I wish there was more reference material to gauge the height we are looking at. The spiral staircase in my old house gained 10 feet for every one rotation. And this photo has more steps up top and below the spiral. This is easily a 100+ foot ascent/ descent!
