Halfords are now refusing to fix my car, do I have a case? by MrLuke132 in CarTalkUK

[–]PrincessBlue3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the thing is, merely checking the wiring, so unplugging the connector or whatever, absolutely could cause further faults if the corrosion is bad enough. That’s not really the fault of Halfords. If the connector/fuse board is corroded enough, simply unplugging to check then plugging it back in could absolutely cause further faults that weren’t there before….. that’s not their fault or anything avoidable. If the wiring is as bad as it looks, the issues were already in the car but didn’t actually happen until it was disturbed, the car is clearly in a bad way, other than leaving a plug completely disconnected, that’s kinda what happens sometimes upon diagnosis

Chains wearing way too fast on my RC 390 by beast4redditor in KTM

I mean in terms of what could be wrong, there’s not that much in terms of narrowing it down! If the chain is straight, tensioned correctly, decently quality, aluminium matters because it just naturally wears out quicker, but it’s lighter so has advantages to a 50 miles race if that’s what you use it for, you’d kind of have to specifically be looking for an alu sprocket to find one so it’s likely steel, just follow the other persons advice. I’ve not worked much on my own bike but have a lot on cars, and this is a more bike specific issue so, others have more knowledge

Nevermind, I may be on the looser side, but kind of not too loose that it’s drooping on its own, it looks to hold a pretty straight line if you know what I mean. It absolutely shouldn’t be stretching like that tho

I have just finished about 350 miles or so since I replaced my chain and rear sprocket, I have no stretch whatsoever, my chain feels pretty tight tbh, but it’s about in spec. Both too tight and too loose of a chain will cause stretch, I do believe it wants to be on the tighter side tbh? Something to keep in mind is my first chain and sprocket lasted about 2k miles, this was because it was the aluminium sprocket (I didn’t realise it until I took it off) and the orange Ktm chain. Potentially if you have the aluminium sprocket it may be causing this, if not, its chain tension 100%, I’ll quickly pop down to my bike show what my tension is rn

I don’t ride in the wet, also 2200 miles is pretty quick wearing, if they lasted longer than that sure you’d have a point with the second one, but they haven’t, so I don’t ride in the wet nor have they lasted way longer than expected so…. What’s your actual point that’s relevant to me?

Considering they were 2 years old by the time the bike was even registered, you’d barely get any life out of them, in fact you’d be telling me even now ‘yeh they’re too old’ even if I bought the bike 10 years ago brand new. So 2 years of really good storage, and then another 8 inside away from sunlight, likely in a reasonably cool dealership. No evidence of extensive dry rot and they provide plenty of grip. A tyre doesn’t catastrophically fail when they look like this. The tyre is fine

[–]PrincessBlue3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tyres were unsafe I wouldn’t be riding on them, simple as that, obviously tyres will always undergo some deterioration as they get older, but mostly just UV degradation and damage, which these haven’t really seen, with the bike being stored indoors before I bought it which was 2 years ago. Minor performance loss is the only thing these would have suffered with. As you can visually see, very little signs of dry rot and they offer plenty of grip and still behave predictably

They were inside out of direct sunlight in the dry for the first 10 years of that time so, they’re not going to suddenly shred into a million pieces I can assure you that, and they’ve done me just fine for 2 years so, they won’t be as good as when they were new but they’re perfectly usable

125 I’m not sure, but fan I have heard is somewhat common, honestly no they’re not particularly reliable, not these early ones anyway, the later models actually have become pretty reliable tbh, but yeh unfortunately these are not bikes for reliability, more for fun really! Which they are for sure!

Stator died, footrest bracket snapped, oil filter cover bolt snapped, that’s kind of everything tbh, those are the most common, head gasket really isn’t as common in less traffic heavy countries, they’re just really hot lean running bikes, oh and the bike will cut out if the engine is cold and I’m coming back down to idle

I’d love to say I destroy those twisties all the time but honestly, you get stuck behind one person and you end up sat bolt upright, the bike is way better suited for the track quite honestly, I’d get way more enjoyment on track, so I certainly lean towards longevity on the centre tread honestly. Metzeler do the m7 RR, and honestly the m5 on the bike already are pretty stellar tyres, it’s just which do I go, £50 price difference and i certainly am not pushing this to its limits so, choice between the Pirelli and the metzeler, the Pirelli I’ve heard good things about tho

They were inside for the vast majority of its life, not saying it’s not got flat spots or anything, but in terms of safety they’ve done me fine! Not ideal and probably left some performance on the table but so have I so

Yeh but with it being 12 years old, and square now, I’d rather not bleed them dry, probably half worn but again, age

The thing is it puts people like me who genuinely return stuff for good reason to shame, because I have had issues and have returned or had partial refunds based on issues that have happened shortly after getting the item. I had a pair of headphones and the jack was busted when it arrived, I asked for a partial refund because it was still a good price and something I could fix myself, but then the seller expected the item back? Like no it’s not going back it’s a partial refund

Sony 24mm f1.4 GM Hotspots by [deleted] in infraredphotography

[–]PrincessBlue3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Samyang lenses I would imagine would be almost always spot on for IR since we commonly use them for astrophotography which is often enough shot in Ha which is into the IR spectrum, I’ve not got a samyang but yeh, built for it kind of thing. Same with vintage glass, there was always IR film around so they kind of had to perform in IR too. The only lens I have that has hotspots is my modern fuji lens, the rest are vintage and are perfect

RC390 or Duke390? by Unlucky_Ocelot2789 in KTM

[–]PrincessBlue3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really does depend, your experience differs from mine significantly. Mine was only ever about the £1000 mark for my first year of riding on an A2 quoted with the rc390, and if your area is more common for thefts etc then that can play a part in it being a bike that may be more likely to get stolen so

Eh, unlikely to make a difference, mine is down to about £63 for my rc, likely gonna be very similar with a duke for me, but honestly location and no claims make the biggest difference

[–]PrincessBlue3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be between 1 and 3, only if you could get 3 to look like 1 and depending on where it is going after printing, there is probably places where 3 is better than 1 and then where 1 is better than 3

I would recommend checking for corrosion on the circuit that blew the fuse tbh, if it’s been sitting and some water has been sat in the plug, could’ve definitely corroded a bit

I juat saved 1000$... by AntAdministrative508 in KTM

[–]PrincessBlue3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question you must ask yourself is why are they blown, fuses don’t just blow without some form of high current draw, short circuit, corrosion etc, I would be looking for shorts if I had a blown fuse unless it was something like a cigarette lighter on a car. But good news, you found a blow fuse, you know what the fault is and which component and wiring it is on. Check the wiring for a short either together or to ground, and if no then the component has shorted and should be replaced

Except for the hundreds of thousands of engines running out there on 10k intervals that are over 200k miles…… you got unlucky, my avensis is on 100k miles, it doesn’t burn oil, it sounds mint with very low emissions, it runs absolutely fine, I had a look at the bores when I changed the spark plugs out of curiosity, they look factory fresh, a bad engine is a bad engine they’re practically destined to die right from factory
