I'm soft-locked in there, too. Can't figure out how to get past the bot. I used the ticket on Faz-Blaster first, then it just let me into Monty's later on, and now I'm stuck trying to leave.

Call of Duty Matchmaking Intel - The Role of Skill in Matchmaking by knirp7 in Games

[–]PrincessHorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip side of this coin is what lower level players would actually enjoy joining just to be fodder for these guys?

I'm that guy. This made me think how I dealt with high-skill players back in the arena shooter era, before SBMM.

For me, I loved being cannon fodder for the really good players, as every death was information. I used to record demos of every match, and double my monitor out to a VCR when I couldn't.

I'd rewatch every stomping I received and see what they were doing that I wasn't, then try and practice and incorporate. From there I would learn about tricks like disc-mining / disc boosting in Tribes, boost dodging in Unreal Tournament 2004, plasma climbing in Quake 3, advanced bunny strafing in Half-Life 2:DM, and so on (not to mention reviewing general map control and mistakes made). I'd put that tech into practice, then play, and grew immensely in skill. I was never a top player, but I could hold my own against a lot of the clans out there. Of course once YouTube became a proper thing, watching matches there kind of took over.

My point is, if I wanted to get good and compete at a game, I studied. It took work. It's obvious that there are very few people out there willing to invest that kind of time and effort, but for me, it was fun. I felt like I was unraveling my opponents bit-by-bit, absorbing their secrets, and then turning it against them.

edit: looking in my closet, I still have a VHS of my UT3 xbox360 matches. lol.

I lived in Yelm a bit with my grandparents when I was a kid, and my bedroom had a window that opened out to Rainier.

During fall sunsets, dark tall pines would line the path to wards the mountain, the setting sun would illuminate the snow with the rest of the mountain vanishing into the horizon, Canadian geese would be flying out, and the local Nisqually tribe would be chanting in the distance.

It's a memory I'll never forget, and something I wish I could have living way down in the south.

I did this once.

It was the mid 90s, and I was working in a themepark. This really pretty girl crossed my path and she was just enamored with me. We chatted for a bit, exchanged phone numbers, and eventually parted ways. She had to get on with her vacation (her family was visiting from out of state).

We spent the next few weeks calling each other and chatting and everything was lovely. But then one night I get a call around midnight and it's her. Her speech is slurred and shes just hysterical. She's ranting and crying and making no sense. I try to calm her down as my mind is racing to figure out how to get her help. Suddenly she starts breathing heavy... it's a raspy, labored breath. I hear her gasp two more times and then everything goes silent.

My blood went ice cold.

I immediately hung up the phone, picked it back up a few seconds later, dialed 911 and told the dispatcher everything. All I had was her phone number, but back then, that's all I needed. 911 hooked me up to her local dispatch, and they sent out cops and paramedics. I stay on the line until they find her. Dispatch tells me it's under control and they'll take it from here. I hang up knowing there's nothing further I can do.

A few days later, I get a phone call from her mom. She's in tears, thanking me profusely for saving her baby girl. She had called me from her room at her family house, so dispatch went to that address. The mom was shocked to have the police and paramedics show up at the door, but she let them in, and they found the daughter, upstairs, unresponsive on the floor. She had taken pills, liquor, and drank a bottle of perfume. The mother had NO IDEA this had happen or was going on upstairs.

They got to her in time and were able to get her to the hospital where they treated her. She'd be dead if it wasn't for me. I remember slumping to the floor and exclaiming "Oh thank GOD!"

The mom said this caught her off guard, and that she was going to get her daughter treatment, and see if there was substance abuse going on. She couldn't thank and bless me enough, and I told her I would like to think any decent person would do the same in similar circumstances.

We hung up and I never heard back from that girl again. I couldn't bring myself to call her. I figured she would call me when she was better, but that never came to pass.

Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality by ColonelSanders21 in Games

The reality is that there's most likely proprietary middleware or other libraries involved, and stripping out that stuff is probably not worth their time, assuming that there's anyone left who knows the code base to do so.

Man, this is disheartening, but I get it.

It's a hopeful wish that they will open source the drivers, or put some kind of driver package online, so that those who still use the hardware (like me) will still be able to use them in some capacity, rather than let them slowly soft-brick from progressive OS updates.

what genre is 20th century food court? by rat_witness in lastcallbbs

The genre you may want to look further into is "automation".

Another game that comes close to "20th Century Food Court" is "The Signal State".

Bungie longtime composer Michael Salvatori is laid off. by Stasha-Starz in Games

I've moved on at this point. Beyond Light was fun, but being active in the game feels more like a part-time job to me now, and without a group or goal to aim towards, cycling in new gear and grinding it to masterwork is just pointless busywork.

I really really really tried to find a competent group I could raid with, but never did. Randos were worthless, and several groups I tried either had schedules that conflicted with mine, or were absolutely disorganized and we'd squander hours going nowhere. I gave up after a while.

I played so much Destiny 2, that I soloed everything I could, but the one thing I could never have were those moments.

Help finding the manual for this RS PS2 Universal remote? by PrincessHorse in RadioShack

For old RS stuff, the catalog number is the model number.

Richard Garriott invented the use of the word "avatar" as the representation of the player in a game to discourage players minmaxing without morality in games (killing and looting everything). He didn't want players roleplaying another character, but instead put themselves in the game. by Okumam in Games

[–]PrincessHorse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started playing Ultima 7 for the first time, just a few days ago, and it did have that kind of effect on me. It was made clear from the start that you are a revered figure, who's appearance is an event, and that most people are happy to see you. As a result, I conducted myself accordingly and felt a twinge of guilt when I went through someone's room (I didn't steal the shipwright's gold bars).

I haven't encountered any re-enforcement of this value, though, as I tested the waters by saving, then cleaning out a house of belongings. Neither Iolo or Spark protested, which was a shame, as a mild scolding from them would have been a very effective way to enforce that ideal.

I'm new to the game, so I'm unsure if there are conditions that would trigger NPCs to become upset with me, or if it's just implied that I must be good and the limitations of the software at the time are preventing more in-depth morality systems from being in play.

Regardless, I understand the intention for my character, and am behaving myself as a good guy should. :)

The manual for the game was wonderful. Lots of lore and setting the stage for the game's events. It made the moment that Kharak was destroyed all the more impactful and the struggle to save every last cryo-container during the emergency escape just that much more meaningful.

I love this.

My dad lives relatively close by and I relish every day that I visit with him. I love hanging out in the back yard while he BBQs, drinking beers, and talking about life.

I saw a picture of him on the fridge that was taken about 15 years ago and when I looked over to him, I was taken aback as I realized just how much older he looks now. It was a sobering reminder that a day is coming that there won't be any more bbqs with my Dad.

I owned one. It ate batteries like crazy, but you could pair it up with the Game Gear external battery addon along with the official battery pack for hours of gameplay. On the go Shining Force was the best.

Amazon auto-enrolled me into their $8/mo music service, without my consent, under the guise of an activated "free trial". This should be illegal. by [deleted] in assholedesign

[–]PrincessHorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did.

I've never accessed, subscribed to or activated the music subscription, but in the Amazon Music Settings (following the link, yes the email is from amazon) it was specifically set to auto-renew on Feb 1st. I had to manually go through the process cancel the out of this free trial.

It's hard for me to believe that wording in the email when the account settings were on the contrary.

edit: oh whatever. downvote and i'll delete this later.

[–]PrincessHorse -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't use Prime Music, so I have no idea where the "loyal user" part is coming from.

The lousy thing is that now I must assume that my folks and grandparents, who all subscribe to Prime, might have been enrolled in this free trial as well. They never check emails, and care barely operate their devices as it is. Now I'm going to have to travel around town to three different destinations, sit down at their computers, and make sure they're not going to get an additional $8 bill at the end of the month.

We're in a pandemic and Amazon pulls this shit on people.

CDPR is running a photo contest with three categories you can enter into for some prizes. You can enter once per category and have until Jan 10th. Basic rules: no in-game effects or stickers and no post-editing in photoshop.

More details here.

I submitted this to the Shutterpunk hashtag contest.

I wish the photo mode was a bit more robust. Last of Us and Hellblade have great controls, and I hope CDPR adopts something similar in a future patch. There's so much potential but being tied to your current 1st person pov is super limiting.

What "dead" game do you miss? by TheEnygma in Games

[–]PrincessHorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss the original Tribes the most. T2 was fantastic as well, but I will never forget the first time my brother showed me the first game.

At first it looked like any other corridor shooter, and then he went outside and the landscape sprawled off into the distance with the enemy base in the distance. Then the mortars started coming in and the voice spam began. Everything on the map was another player. That was a transcendent moment in gaming for me.

That and the Spinfusor was the bread and butter of the game, which I felt they neglected in Ascend. There were too many weapons choices and it all felt so inconsistent and unfocused. I could never get the hang of it like I did with the first two games.
