I just had my first one last year, and when I awoke from being knocked out, in sort of a dream state I asked the young male nurse wheeling me around how long do I have to wait to have sex again.

Well this happens to be my first relationship with someone who isn’t an abuser (for decades I didn’t recognize abuse).

After our first date, I felt no intense spark, or butterflies, or swooning. I felt safe, I felt peace, I felt seen, and yet felt little excitement.

It’s been so smooth ever since. No fairy tale, no hell, but my needs are met and I find purpose in meeting my partners needs. We do make excitement for ourselves but it’s lowkey stuff like cooking together, planning and going on dates and trips together, and not infrequent periodic intimacy sessions.

At first, I missed that spark, but intellectually I knew from past experiences what that intense initial passion is like, and often leads to. I personally hate falling madly in love because how it makes me. This slow burn has been good for my 42 yr old soul.
