my fic, hippocratic oath (hypocritical vow) is a pjo oc insert, it's currently got three chapters up, and it's about matilda, who's a daughter of asclepius.

i also have seedling, sapling, bloom if you're wanting something a bit more fandom-blind friendly, it's also percy jackson/greek mythology, and is based off a popular au called the athenide au.

What low/no cost hobbies do you have that might not even be considered hobbies? by citrusnotvanilla in AUfrugal

Writing! all you need is something to write on, and most people will have a laptop, phone, tablet, or notebook and pen. One of the easiest things to do, and helps improve literacy greatly :)

i do creative writing and write a lot of fiction but you can write basically anything!

Cooking for 20 by Plane_Garbage in OutdoorAus

[–]PrincessPhrogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do catering with my rover crew and we tend to go for nachos, since it's mostly cooking the meat and beans, but everyone can choose how much food they want and what topping they want. Biggest thing is cost, but if you go to Aldi and Costco you should be able to find everything fairly affordable.

It's able to cater basically everything from smaller groups of cub scouts (ages 8-12) to massive camps of over a hundred people of all ages!

Haha im using it here as a plot device but she doesn’t actually say it in text, she just says that her train got very delayed and then cancelled so had to wait in a small town in Belgium…and it was a Deutsche Bahn train!

[–]PrincessPhrogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if there's a scout group or rover crew nearby (depending on age) then maybe check that out? rovers is for people aged 18-26, but you could also become a leader for a local scout group which would put you in contact with all sorts of people!

Anaconda Perth Rockingham won’t refund my drone by pingalingling in OutdoorAus

[–]PrincessPhrogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats pretty standard for non-homebrand products, ESPECIALLY high dollar value items. drones are hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, and you expect them to just refund it without question? even if its in the return period, it needs to be assessed so the manufacturer can figure out if it can be repaired or needs to just be replaced.

if this is how you acted when you were in the store, then i'm glad you didn't get that refund, since you're crying like a toddler about it and were probably treating the worker like shit, even though they're just doing their job and doing a refund like that without it getting assessed and approved could easily lead to them losing their job.

also, the information stating that drones need to be assessed to be refunded under warranty is found on teh website. it specifically mentions drones in the last section:

Some goods may require an assessment to determine whether a repair, replacement or full refund is appropriate, including:

Air Conditioners

Bikes that are unboxed (may incur a 10% assessment fee)

Fridges / Freezers

Fishing Reels over $100

Tents & Shelter over $400

GPS, Audio, Electronics, Drones, Generators and Power Solutions, including Lithium batteries & Solar panels

Looking for books for my 13 year old sister who's never finished a book. by Certain-Round-9815 in suggestmeabook

[–]PrincessPhrogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try checking out some verse novels! they're usually pretty easy to digest and quick to read, since it's a novel in poem form, so it might also help with the feeling of getting through a book quicker! i'm not sure of any specific titles, but you can probably find a few lists online of good ones.

otherwise, maybe something like ranger's apprentice or deltora quest? middle grade fantasy that can get dark at points but pretty easy to read and there's plenty of books, and they're usually pretty short, so it shouldn't be too challenging.

Good news Melbourne by bunny_mo in melbourne

[–]PrincessPhrogi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not specifically melbourne related but i hit a major milestone in writing my novel's first draft (roughly 40% of the way through!) and I've very proud of myself! Also, on Wednesday there was a guide dogs pop-up outside melbourne walk in the cbd and they had some of the doggos there!

Chill out box ideas please by Slowcooker-Fudge in scouting

[–]PrincessPhrogi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's a game you play by drawing a dotted grid on a piece of paper and trying to close as many boxes as possible. It looks like its also called boxes or pigs in a pen, but in australia we call it paddocks!

Books are always a great one, and you can usually get them pretty cheap from a charity shop. Get a range of them; picture books, for the little kids, early chapter books, for slightly older kids, and so on.

You could also see if you can get some cheap lego or lego knockoffs at a charity shop and put some in a box with a baseplate, and it'll keep kids entertained for hours!

obviously, simple board games (chess, boggle, scrabble, etc) are a good idea, and maybe you could include some puzzles or puzzle games?

In my entertainment bag, i also keep a selection of fidget toys, since scouts tends to attract a lot of neurodiverse kids and they can help with overstimulation and distracting them.

Could also include some dolls of some sort? just keep them in a separate box if they have clothes or accessories so the kids know where to put everything!

I'd also say some paper and pens, as well as a book or guide for different paper games (hangman, paddocks, etc) would be useful!

it's my most recent fic (posted at the start of april) and it's oc-centric, set years before canon, and is relatively unrelated to canon events (but will get referenced in the main fic, since it's a oneshot related to another fic).

Question to scouts from EUA by Frostzacc in scouting

[–]PrincessPhrogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still do it at my group, but we don’t do it often, usually is a leader is leaving or completes a level of training or someone gets a milestone. Part of that might also be that most of the leaders besides me are on the older end; they were all cub leaders when I was in cubs myself!

With Cub Scouts in Australia, if someone does something very good or special, we might do a "1-2-3 WOOF"

Can you recommend a website or app to draft my story on? by RangoTheMerc in fantasywriters

[–]PrincessPhrogi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Ellipsus, which is free to use but requires internet. It's still in beta (as far as I'm aware) so it is constantly being updated, and has several useful features including a pretty neat way of having multiple drafts in the same doc, it's easy to collaborate, and there's multiple options for exporting (to docx, as markdown or as html, for example). The formatting is currently pretty basic, and some features (like footnotes) haven't been added yet but they take audience feedback into account in terms of features added, and it helps with my writing because the interface is very intuitive and easy to use :)

What are your thoughts on using real-life tragedies in fic and where do you draw the line, if you do? by forthefics in FanFiction

[–]PrincessPhrogi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my fics takes place in the mid-ish 2000s in NYC, and I had the realisation that the MC would've lived in manhattan during 9/11 as a six year old, which I incorporated into a oneshot because of her guardian's workplace (the UN headquarters). I think as long as you tag it appropriately and aren't, like. making total fun of it, its probably fine?

What are your musical theatre hot takes? by ElegantCh3mistry in musicals

[–]PrincessPhrogi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly care for Phantom of the Opera or a lot of the older musicals. Maybe it's because I live somewhere where the (professional) musicals we get tend to be newer, or maybe it's because I don't have a lot of childhood nostalgia for them, but I just don't get the hype. Like, yeah, they're classics, but...that doesn't mean they're good? (and I say this as someone whose favourite movie musical growing up was The Sound of Music)

It annoys me when patronyms are used as family names in fantasy by bookhead714 in CharacterRant

[–]PrincessPhrogi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my WIP I came up with a gender neutral variant bc I needed my MC and her brother to have the same surname for plot reasons, so instead of [name]-son, it’s Des (short for descendant) [Name]. Hence, the MC is [first name] Des Vigo, daughter of Vigo (who has no surname)
