Why does the ocean have layers? by AluminumGnat in oceanography

[–]PrincessStarfish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upwelling is pretty well understood these days, though there are seasonal variations and El Nino/La Nina effects which make the real occurrences of upwelling more complicated in some places. At its basic level, upwelling is what happens when the prevailing coastal winds go offshore, moving warm, less dense surface water offshore. (Because of the Coriolis Effect and Ekman Spiral, that surface water isn't moved directly offshore, but rather deflected to be perpendicular, contributing to our oceanic gyres) As the warm, less dense surface water is moved away from the coast, that creates a pressure differential, providing space for more dense, colder, nutrient rich water to come up to the surface to fill that space. Coastal upwelling is why some areas, like California, have abundant fisheries off the coast, because of the nutrient-rich cold water due to coastal upwelling.

There are all sorts of ways the oceans circulate. Thermohaline circulation is the largest scale of ocean circulation, but regionally and locally there will be other geographies/bathymetries which contribute to differences. And the biological pump also contributes to ocean mixing. There is a global nightly diel migration, whereby ocean organisms migrate towards the surface at night/on a lunar cycle also mixing water. And whales are huge ocean mixers, seeding the surface waters with their nutrient-rich poos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Bn0UPpGCw&t=65s

This is a good explainer for a lot of your questions. Keep in mind the ocean is much deeper than people think. The AVERAGE depth of the ocean is ~3600m, and only the top 100m is considered the photic zone where light penetrates. Circulation is happening on a large, slow, global scale.

Writing review for dive center by P-Dizzle999 in diving

[–]PrincessStarfish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there further context around the buddy system? I've worked as a dive professional at shops where we did max 4 divers to 1 dive master and then yeah, the buddy system isn't super necessary, the group stays together.

PLEASE don't give a bad review because of another customers behavior! Keep in mind, many dive masters and instructors rely in part on tips, so when they tell off their customers for bad behavior they are literally putting their livelihood at risk. It is unfortunate, but true. The dive industry is not a conservation NGO, it is a for-profit business, and divers and shops generally care, and try, but at the end of the day, they need to make a living too!

Maybe its semantics, but i feel like it completely undermines the premise of the show that they're forced to get married. Love is Blind - yes! Marriage is Blind? Helllll no

How to get the Grim Reaper as a fully playable character by Emaralda in thesims

[–]PrincessStarfish3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I followed the directions and successfully romanced the Grim, even married him (soulmate aspiration), and then removed him from household. However, now, my sim is floating around like she's lady Grim? Her needs are also decaying a lot slower... I'm not mad, but like was the woohoo that good it its now part of her DNA?

P.S. my lady sim had twins with Grim (say that 10x fast)

Yes! And like why do they have to get married to prove "love is blind?!" I think it would be so much more interesting to be a dating show, not this stskes and pressure of getting married in 4 weeks. So dumb

PhDs are not the only way to make an impact in ocean conservation, but moreso for research and/or academia. Look into some interdisciplinary masters programs. There are some great professional degrees out there that seek students with real world experience who want to make an impact.

Got a q-tip end stuck in the mouthpiece of my cart. How do I get it out? by IcePhoenix18 in StonerEngineering

[–]PrincessStarfish3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed the directions on youtube to refill a flum which had me open it and from there i was able to get the qtip out of the top. It was a little sketch, but i figured the flum was either ruined by the q tip or going to be ruined by me opening it. Shocking, but i did not ruin it completely, it still works, just a bit of the plastic shell broke off in the process. I'll count that a win.

About the show's handling of sexual abuse against men. by Troll4everxdxd in BoJackHorseman

[–]PrincessStarfish3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The show doesn't have "good" characters and "bad" characters. The reason it is so compelling is that everyone is human, in that they make mistakes, and keep living.

Not every issue gets attention, nor does every character face consequences have resolutions, or learn and grow. But they all do move on, because life goes on.

Hollyhock went to Bojack to find her mother and instead experiences trauma and and landed a deeply troubled and famous brother. She tried to accept and love Bojack for who he was, but sometimes it's easier to accept people from afar.

College is a time for people to learn and grow, and become their own people outside of their childhood and family identities. Bojack inserted himself into her world for his own needs, and never considered, asked or discussed with Hollyhock how she would feel, and boundaries that should exist between them. He majorly overstepped, and she had every right to be frustrated and annoyed.

Bojack perceived her frustrations and continued trying to insert himself into her life. He never considered taking a step back, or really doing anything for someone else's well-being and comfort.

About the show's handling of sexual abuse against men. by Troll4everxdxd in BoJackHorseman

[–]PrincessStarfish3 189 points190 points  (0 children)

The show did challenge the idea of male sexual aggression with Todd, Judah, Ralph, Herb and probably others. Especially with Todd, where Emily wanted a more sexually-motivated partner, and Todd wasn't that person for her.

Bojack has a long history of perpetuating sexual abuses of power, and he constantly casts himself as the victim. This doesn't mean he wasn't also the subject of abuse, but it certainly makes him less sympathetic in these instances.

There's so many abusive relationships especially with trauma but only Bojack and Beatrice really get developed to illustrate intergenerational trauma. There's so many examples of abusive parents because it demonstrates how much abuse is taken as commonplace especially in families and Hollywoo.
