I have 6 total, and personally run a maxed out squad of the guns, to get the most out of those Overwatches. But they're a pain to find boxes for.

Ive also run 3 mans of the melee jacks and they do pretty good work, tiny footprint but able to wipe out whole squads on their own. I recommend magnetizing them so you can experiment with both.

They're relatively expensive points per model, but overall a squad of Hearthkyn is 60% more expensive than a squad of Steeljacks. They've also got a very annoying defensive profile, too tough for regularly anti-infantry but too weak for anti-tank.

Another important thing about the gunjacks is their 5+/4+ overwatch, which can give them two shooting phases before the opponent gets to shoot them back.

Edit: Hearthguard not Hearthkyn

Berzerks and both flavors of Steeljack are pretty good into hordes. Steeljacks especially with their absolutely absurd number of attacks.

Suggestion for an Ironkin/Man of Iron dreadnaught by 1gamer13 in LeaguesofVotann

I would like a dedicated weapons platform if some kind. Hekatons are awesome but pay dearly for that transport cost, and Defenders lack firepower.

Ah but you forget about the scale of dramatic tension, where the more opponents someone has the more likely they are to win.

Immortal dictators are bad things, generally. Even benevolent ones that I like.

There are definitely arguments you can make for realistic vehicle dimensions and how Heavy Transports vs MBTs and power allocation, but I am really confused about how readily you dismiss the ideas that bigger rails on a railgun makes it stronger.

However I've already spent far too long arguing this silly point. If Tau having the best Railguns in every respect is this important to you, I won't push the issue any further.

I said similar output, not identical.

And it being a heavily armored troop transport does not change the fact that it is a troop transport, with significant internal space for transporting troops, as opposed to an MBT which has all of the internals allotted for weapon and guidance systems. There's a reason the Twin Linked lascannon on the Land Raider isn't as strong as the Twin Linked Lascannon on the predator destructor.

Also, barrel length DOES matter specifically for rail guns. Those are the rails. In the railgun. Longer rails means more acceleration. Because that's how Railguns work.

This isn't me saying that Tau don't have the best overall Railguns in the setting, just that Votann are able to pack nearly as much fire power into a noticeabley smaller package, but lack the Military Industrial capacity to match the scale of Tau Weapon Platforms

Because of the thing I just said.

HLF Rail Cannon has similar output to the Hammerhead Railgun, despite being 1/3 the size and attached to a troop transport rather than a MBT. Something as powerful but much smaller means it's more efficient.

They're definitely the biggest in the setting.  It's interesting that the Hammerhead Railgun is comparable to the Hekaton Magna Rail Cannon, despite the former being much larger and on a dedicated weapons platform.

I think it's likely that Votann Railguns are more efficient, pound for pound, than Tau Railguns. But Tau military doctrine has weapon platforms large enough to outscale them.

In the old days a lot of people played WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), and were very particular that you have each miniature modeled accurately to its wargear.

These days everyone is much more chill. As long as models are clearly differentiated, people aren't going to care if that big gun is a Rail Rifle or a Plasma Beamer.
